I love the sound of original 40 flowmasters, but obviously they are know for drone...my uncle had them on his stang, and he said it was unbearable. his was a 90 5.0, does liter matter? would a 96 be different then a 03 and so on? 2v different then 4v? does putting a different midpipe help? o/r h or x? i have the 3.5 in magnaflow tips going past the bumper.

those of you that have flows, what are you running, how is the drone? any suggestions?

All im going to say is that i love my flowmasters! My dad used to have flowmasters on his 85 5.0 and it sounded badass also. I do not remember which flowmasters he was running though.

Yes the original flowmaster 40s drone. But i put a pypes off road x pipe on my 98gt and it sounds amazing.

I ran the 50 series 3 chambers with both an offroad h, and offroad x, and longtubes, and with dumps. i had almost no drone if that. the dumps caused the most drone. you'll definitely want tailpipes out the back. h or x didn't really matter, I just preferred the sound of the h, especially low rpms cruising. longtubes made interior noise slightly louder. I also drove a 97 vert with cats cut (still had resonators) with original 40s and it didn't drone much at all. also an 00 gt with original 40s and bbk o/r x that wasn't bad inside. honestly flowmasters aren't too bad unless you bog the engine at low rpms and dump the tailpipes.

I have stock headers and midpipe with original 40 flows and it makes the car sound so much more badass.then stock! And I take 2.5 hr drives all the time and the drone doesnt bother me.

the drone is the meanest right around 2500rpm IMO but its part of driving a sports car if you ask me. just something that comes in the package deal lol. i have flow 40's/MAC off-road H/FRPP shorty headers (this is all on a 4v) for a midpipe i always recommend MAC. i had a prochamber and now my off-road H and have loved both of them. great sound/quality/fit. i too will say to run the exhaust all the way out the back (no dumps) that helps some with the interior noise but you will still have it, no way around that haha.

I had a bbk h and liked it, except it hung a little low. I love how high my Mac pro dumps sit - tuck up under the body real nice. if I pull off my longtubes it'll be for stock manifolds and a Mac h. should offer a bit more ground clearance.

i ran open non catted pypes x-pipe with bbk shorty headers for about 8 minutes on first startup of my car. goddamn that was the loudest most discusting scary noise i ever heard.

^ ran open longtubes on my car for a week. i have never gotten so much attention in my life. and i have also never had a worse headache in my life.

on a side note, super 40 vs original 40 - i prefer the originals. they have the ghostly hollow sound that made flowmaster famous. and it just sounds orgasmic on a 4.6. slightly tin-can like with an x pipe, but with an h its sexy as hell. super 40s sound more like glasspacks to me (as well as the super 44 - probably the least flowmaster tone of all ive heard)

i currently run pacesetter lt's, pacesetter o/r x, and mac pro dumps and its really not that loud to me (then again i drive the thing a lot) and the drone is bearable if you dont lug the motor around at low rpms. im sure flowpaths dont drone anywhere near as bad as flowmasters did (no dumps of course) let my gf race it around one time and she immediately set off a car alarm before leaving the parking lot lol. also managed to take out a g6 gxp :D woot.

96-98 2V and 4V have the same mid pipe. and go crazy do straight pipes! thats what i did. i get a lot of attention..... and 1 speeding ticket (cop heard me which drew his attention and made him grab his radar gun.... he would have never bothered me, his words not mine) i love the sound!

ive actually been considering straight pipes in place of my pro dumps. theyre just too quiet. i just know the drone would be stupid loud if i kept it dumped, so id have to do tailpipes again (not a fan). not only that, but you lose a lot of the low rpm tone with straight pipe. wot is ungodly though.

edit: powa, in no way am i suggesting you do what im doing. i loved my flowmasters (even though they were quiet 50 series 3 chambers) and i miss my h pipe more than anything. but spend enough time around these cars and you get bored sounding like everybody else (or your hearing just gets worse lol)
