How in the world does my harmonic balancer break?!

If you hit something going down the road and it smacks it at 60mph. Also, its usually the seal or the bolt holding the balancer on that goes bad.

hrmm. weird. i was just driving the other day and the engine just went bezerk. Me and my dad had no clue to what it was, seeing as though EVERYTHING but the shaking of the engine was fine.

Yea. Its really hard to actually "break" a harmonic balancer. It gets bent in most cases.

Mines shattered :dunno how it happened

is it shattered? or did the rubber on it break, ive seen it several times where the rubber on it let go and the pulley part separated causing the belt to jump off.

It's shattered I believe.

I will tomorrow. That's when were fixing it.

the rubber goes bad, that holds the outer ring n place. if yours came apart, then the ring hit something b/c it was wobbling... i can see the possibility of it breaking

A long breaker bar works nicely.

Did you get an OEM replacement?
28oz? 50oz?

those are the best i could get.

Edit: :dunno the 50oz? its pretty heavy.

I can't even tell where its "broken" :D.

I got a 50oz on my car when mine went out. I don't really know the difference between them besides weight. Can anyone shine some light on my ignorance?

ok, so it isnt shattered, like you posted. It merely failed in the most normal of fashions... the rubber ring delaminated, and the outer section came apart... We have come to know this is the NORMAL failure of this part. unbolt the pulley, its held on by 4 bolts. then start working on the crank bolt. its 15/16"

They told me it shattered... Just telling you when they told me.

We got it off but apparently this had happened before, seeing as though the threading is ****ed up. Does anyone know the size of the bolt so I know what size of tap and die kit to buy?

Everything I have found are between 2 inches and 2.05 inches long. I'm sure the 2 inch will work fine.

The thread size is 5/8" -18. (18 is the thread count size. VERY important.)

I had to put a new bolt on my old camaro for its harmonic balancer just recently. Just go to Home Depot and go to the bolt isle. They have a whole WALL of different sizes.

Just look for:

2" x 5/8" - 18
