When I was at the track in my V6 last friday night, a guy in another 3.7 v6 with huge 19 or 20 inch chrome wheels was in line just a few cars in front of me. I heard them say his time was 14.6. My take, for what its worth, the car will not only perform its full potential, but look the way the v6 should with modest sized wheels and tires. Personally, I wouldnt go beyond max spec on width, which is 8.5. On the hieght, Ford put 19s on the performance package which I think is too tall. I drove a charcoal grey performance v6 w black mach wheels before anything else. When I walked up to the 18 mustangs they had on the lot, that car caught my eye. The wheels, from just the right angle are hideously sick on any color stang. But, the car lacked acceleration on third anf fourth gear punches vs base model. 90% of defending your cars honor is a pull up confrontation about a 30 to 40mph. Those 331 gears dont overcome the huge wheels when you punch it from cruising speed. The smaller the better in that scenario. Besides, if more V6 guys didnt try to look like they got a shelby, the V8 stang owners might show their lil bro some love. Ford should have never gave the V6 performance pck those exclusive 19 inch wheels. They are one of the most viscious looking wheels Ive seen, certainly by ford. Those wheels should be on a GT or higher. Im thinking 18 x 8 all around is max for the v6 with minimal power loss.. 18x8 in front and 18 x 8.5 in the rear if your dead set on the stagger look.. The v6 is worthy of a slight stagger to show some muscle, no doubt, but the muscle shouldnt exceed whats really under the hood. Follow that rule when customizing your v6 and you wont hear: you shoulda got the V8. I wouldnt sacrifice the heart of my car for a look. Especially if that look over states what I really got.

I agree although I am running 9's in the back which i think is perfect, imo width is not that big of a deal but wheel size is, I am running 18x9's and I think that is one of the best set ups to have. Btw what did you run at the track?

Wheels

I ran 13.78 with a sleeping .957 R/T. My car is base auto with just the bama tune. I discovered that the p215s on the 17 inch wheels are not quite enough rubber when the cars been flashed and you really go for it. I wrote a post describing my experience the best a novice can. Can I ask where ya got your wheels. I was going to get some off American Muscle, but surprisingly they dont have 1 wheel set that is 18 x 8 or 18 x 8.5. I initially wanted to go with the 17 x8 in front and 17 x9 in the rear black/silver ringed ole school wheels they selling, but my car will look like a 4x4 mustang when i go from a 65 down to the lower profile 55. Something else that kinda bothers me. I dont know how I feel about having a p235/55 on front and a p255/50 on the rear. The sidewalls hieghts are not the same. That will bug me eventhough its prolly no bigg. To get a good deal on wheels I may have to go with the 17s and get a set of 1 inch lowering springs. eventhough Im not gaga over the dropped look. My last muscle car was a 73 plymouth duster and back in the 70s we used to put gabriel high jacker air shocks in the back and raise it up slightly higher than the front for the hi rider look. We wouldnt put chrome on muscle cars back then.. only polished allum was considered on a serious car. I remember when my friend who had a Nova bought a set of chrome kragars. Ironically the same design as the wheels im interested in now from American Muscle. LOL Anyhow the crowd we hung with used to give him a hard time about them. We all had a wheel called US Indy slotted dish mags. Except for a few guys who could afford a wheel called centerlines. Which was fully enclosed wheel with some studs going around. They were really light and looked incredible. When you polished the alluminum the shine looks expensive and the wheels look more performace oriented than chrome.

Yea most of those are strictly drag wheels now a days especially the centerlines. I got my wheels off of AM, like I said they are 18x9s but it works just right for me but when I made passes down the track with them I was completely stock so idk what their gonna be like come spring.

your posts hurt me eyes!!!

and the comment about "shoulda got a v8"...no matter WHAT you do to your six, people are always going to say you shoulda got a v8! even if your running 10sec car...people are stubborn and just think its the only thing you can run, maybe back in the day but obviously not anymore :p

The Performance Package 19's are not that heavy compared to the 17" and 18" wheels that Ford manufactures. None of them are light by most enthusiasts standards.

People get really hung up on this idea of rotational mass. There's a lot more to it than just the weight. The overall weight of two wheels can be identical for instance. Let's say 20 lbs on each wheel. Take an extreme comparison, 1 wheel 20 lbs, 1" wide x 20" tall. Compare that to another wheel 10" wide x 10" high. The first wheel has a rotational mass that far exceeds the second. Just spinning the first one by hand takes several times the effort as spinning the second one.

My point isn't to say a 19" wheel is better. I'm simply stating 2-3 lbs on a rim that is wider, who's to say without measuring it with the proper tools which wheel has the higher rotational mass.

If you don't think the 3:31 gears make up for the 19" wheels look up all of the times tested by Road & Track, Motor Trend, Car & Driver etc. Which cars are running 1/4 miles in the 13's. Which ones are running mid 14's?

I'm running the 19" SVT wheels. They're pretty light. 10" in back - 9" up front. I just put them on last night. It really depends on what size tire you're going for. You could fit a 305 on these. If you're going for 255's, I wouldn't go anymore than an 8 or 9 inch wheel. They'll even stretch on a 9 if you have 255's. My fronts definitely do. You also want to take what you're changing from into consideration. Mine was well worth it because I was going from base V6 wheels to this.

As for the guy at the track, he probably had no idea what he was doing if he got a time like that. Usually people who put giant (especially chrome) wheels on a car like this (with the exception of a good performance one such as the super snake wheels) have no clue how to drive it in a performance oriented way. It's all about who looks the "best" which in my opinion, wouldn't be someone like him anyway because massive wheels like that just look stupid.

And for your horribly biased generalization, any Mustang can have the performance pack wheels. I'd love Shelby's and wish I could have had one or even a GT which I'll probably do for 2014, but I'm not doing this to be a look alike, I simply like the styling. This isn't an insecurity based defense on your post about GT's, it's to shut out stupidity. That's like saying that a 2011 V6 can't have them, but a 2010 GT with almost the same power can. Please, state facts when you post and read up a bit more about gearing before you make blanket statements on it.

Some shops will list their wheels as "Brembo compatible" or something to that sort, letting you know that they will clear larger brakes such as (and you guessed it...) brembos. I was looking at getting some 18's that clear brembos, in the event I ever upgrade my brakes.

I'm confused by 'big wheels' - when I checked the tire diameter of the 19inch wheels they're actually smaller than the stock wheels. I used one of the tire size checkers on the web. The 19 inch is the wheel diameter, not the tire diameter. The 19 inch tires have a smaller profile.

Gotta read the thread bud. They're not talking about the height of the tire. They're talking about the weight of 19's vs. 17's & 18's and clearing brakes. Has nothing to do with the height of tire.

I have a big tool. It's heavy and wide but as tall as most guys.....:D

EDIT: Ah just saw the OP's comment. Yeah I don't know what he mean. He seems to think the 19's are a taller tire setup in general.
