Hey Gang,
I'm new here. I just bought a used 2011 Grabber Blue convertible that was a program car with California Emissions on it. I had been renting a 2012 V6. The 2012 was not a Cali. car. It seemed to run better.
Will a Tuner like a SCT with a Bama tune get rid of my California emissions?

Thanks

I'm not sure what you mean.

Can you define 'running better'? I can't imagine someone selling you a car 'tuned' for bad performance.

Regarding the BAMA tunes: you will see increased performance and throttle response with the tunes, regardless if your car is auto or manual.

Do you live in Cali? If so i would leave the CE on there....

Welcome to MM!!

I live in Missouri. I thought that by my car having the stricter California Emission Laws the horsepower might be down with a California Emissions car. It use to be like that in the 80s. California Emissions Cars would be rated a few horses less.
Just ordered my Tuner from American Muscle. Starting with just an Airaid Cold Air intake. I'm waiting to see what tests show the increase in HP is with some mid or longtube headers on the new V6 Stang.
Thanks

We've already tested headers here, there are a few of us running around with long tube headers and they've made about a 30hp increase on top of their cai/tune. It doesn't sound like much, but at the dyno (dynojet) they were making just shy of 300 wheel horsepower, for our v6 without any turbo or super charger.

Pretty good numbers if you ask me.

Nice! Id take 30 HP. I noticed with BBKs longtubes they suggest you use somthing else with them. Do the factory cats hurt HP? And if so, whats the alternatives? Is it much problem to have a Tune changed? I have the Bama Tune. I live in western Missouri, so we dont have the strict Emissions Tests like some of the bigger cities do.
PS California cars used to have more pollution junk on them before. If they still are that way, I'm hoping I get even more gains than normal with the Tuner.

The age of "California Cars" and "Federal Cars" doesn't exist anymore. All new cars sold are 50-state legal. On top of that, California doesn't put stickers on cars for passing emissions.

Honestly, I think it's just a red herring.

Yeah Reverend, I think we saw the writing on the wall a long time ago. The EPA is mandating the California emissions standards nationally by 2016 and is collaborating with California regulators on stricter national emissions standards by 2017 and they are headed straight for your wallet.

As you pointed out, most new cars sold, are identically equipped as far as emissions are concerned, but some parts such as ECU’s and catalytic converters are still coded with different part numbers for California cars, but that is Irrelevant at this point anyway.

The newer federal laws make it illegal to “tamper with virtually any part of your car which deals with the engine, but don’t worry it’s for your own good. Meanwhile the EPA at 10.5 billion dollars a year is conjuring up the next big scheme to beat you into submission; so called greenhouse gasses, which are on the chopping block. I wonder who’s going to pay for that program. Well, I guess well just borrow more money, won't we?

Yeah, I do think it's interesting that the EPA wants to go down the Cali SMOG path... funny part about that is if it does, California instantly becomes the most permissive state for modding, as it's the only state (I'm aware of) that has a way to legally modify your vehicle (via CARB-numbered parts). Every other state basically says modifications that effect emissions are totally illegal, they just don't currently check/enforce those laws.

My 2012 has Cali. Emmisions pack on it as well, however before I bought it I also test drove another 2012 without the Cali. pack on it. I could not tell a difference at all. Maybe its just me, dunno. Haha
