My wife took her 07 GO Mustang GT in for the yearly state inspection yesterday. There weren't any problems with her car--at the garage, they took it for a spin around the block and all of a sudden the check engine light came on (AFTER they pulled back into the garage). They ran the test (and of course they took the $$$) then failed the car because of the CEL. They checked the computer and said that the #6 cylinder was misfiring. I know they caused this to happen since it was fine when it driven into there!!!!

Nothing had been done to car in over two weeks and all I did was change the oil/filter, changed the fuel filter (nasty), clean the air filter and hose off the engine.

This car has ran like a champ since day one--we've had it for 5 years now and have just over 30k miles on it.

What can we do to fix this problem??? Everything we've read about it says anything and everything to fix it, but nobody can say the same thing.

Any ideas???

Thanks

Was probably just a random misfire 07CS is not really a problem reset codes and go re-inspect. If you like you can pull #6 coil check the coil to plug contacts for corrosion if there is some just scrape clean with a sharp pick then put a little dielectric grease in the coil boot and reinstall. It's not a high milage car is it? Do you think you maybe over didit with the hose? Should be no big deal good luck!

I would check the plug and also make sure the air filter is seated right. Ive had my car throw a too lean code after I changed the filter to a K&N and reseating it solved the problem.

Random misfire seems to be a common code though.

My '97 F150 has had it's share of coils go out in the 13 years that I have owned it. A couple of times they acted up and miss fired throwing a CEL. I would check which cylinder it was then clear the code. It wouldn't take long before it went completely out. I always keep a new one on hand.
I'm glad we don't have state inspections here. Those guys probably get wood when they see a nice Mustang roll up!

So you just washed it right? Possibly a bad COP. Do you have anyone you know with a tuner or even someone else with a 2005-2007 Mustang G? Could swap COPs with them on cylinder 6 and see if it fixes your problem. I would just go ahead and buy a COP, replace it, be done with it.

I washed it a couple of weeks ago--no issues whatsoever--I didn't use too much water.

not to sound stupid, but what is a COP??? Coil???

thanks for the inputs--I appreciate the help.

We've had a K &N on it for about three years now.

Remember, I did all of the 30K work a couple of weeks ago--the problems shouldn't be showing up now--I would think, but they are cars!!!

Shouldn't the code correct itself?? If it's random, why would I have to clear the fault code??? Usually if the fault corrects itself, wouldn't the code go away??

Not a lot of water--never do.

I don't ahve a tuner--is there another way to reset the code besides taking it to a shop???

Thanks

COP = Coil on Plug. It can take effect a couple of weeks later. My Pop's F250 ended up having issues with a few COPs a few weeks later after he decided to wash the motor. It's possible. It's possible that it's just a completely random thing and the COP went out. I really doubt it's a random misfire that threw a code.

sorry about the repeat responses--my computer was messing up.

Thanks for all of the help--I don't do a lot of work on the car except the small stuff--oil/fuel/exhaust/shocks--I don't get into the negine too much.

I figure my wife doesn't let me drive it, I don't work on the engine!!!

thanks again.

07CS no the code won't correct itself just head to an auto zone/advance/pep boys get the parts guy to scan it (dont offer too much info) justtellem your light came on and you'd like to know what's up get them to clear it for you then drive for a few days to reset readiness indicators then re inspect. Or buy a $40 scanner and reset yourself. Oh and while your there buy a can of mass air sensor cleaner and clean that off too, the oil from the k&n can buildup on the mass air and cause issues as well.
