Well I think its the pinion bearing. I have a constant whirling noise that is completely dependent on speed and is starting to annoy. When I had my 4.10s put in I didn't replace any of the bearings and now I am kicking myself in the ass for that. The noise doesn't change turning either way nor does it change accelerating or decelerating its always the same. The noise speeds up while accelerating and slows while decelerating.

Will this kit from American Muscle work? It says it fits only up to 2004 but its listed under the 2005-2009 section as well:

Ford Racing Mustang Ring & Pinion Installation Kit - 8.8in Solid Rear (86-04 V8) at AmericanMuscle.com - Free Shipping!

I am wanting to replace every bearing and seal in the rear while I am in there. Does anyone know how much a shop would charge to install this kit?

sounds like a plan then. Would there be any ill effects if I keep driving on this bad bearing for a while?

i did say "should" be. that's about the going rate, but some have been screwed over in the parts and install prices. just make sure you know what they are charging you for everything vs what you can get it yourself for.

I verified on the the Ford parts website that all the bearings in the 8.8 diff have the same part numbers between 2004 and 2005 so they must be interchangeable. I will call and make sure that they will work.

I plan on putting the car up on jack stands this weekend to find out exactly where this noise is coming from. In the meantime here is a video of said noise. I know its faint but you can definitely hear it. I did notice that it changes pitch depending on load, when accelerating it quiets down and is louder when decelerating. Before I check it out on the weekend does anyone have any guesses as to what is causing this noise?

It doesn't make the noise when revving in neutral at a stop, if I put the car in neutral while moving the noise is still there. The noise speeds up and slows down depending on speed. I don't think that u-joints would make that kind of noise, but I have no idea what bad pinion bears sound like. The noise doesn't change when I am turning left or right at speed so I don't think its a wheel bearing. I'm thinking pinion bearing but I don't want to spend money on that if I don't have to. I can do wheel bearings myself, but pinion bearings and carrier bearings I would have to bring to a shop to get done. I guess it can be one wheel bearing causing this and resonating throughout the car with all poly bushings in the rear.

EDIT: the whirring noise is there at any speed whether it be accelerating or decelerating.

I know the only way to really find out is to put the rear on jack stands and spin the wheels at around 40-50 mph and get a stethoscope and pinpoint where it is coming from. Doing this very carefully mind you.

Well the car is in the shop getting all new bearings put into the rear, minus the wheel axle bearings. We shall see if the noise goes away after replacing all the bearings.

I don't think so. The sound doesn't change at all if I am taking a hard turn in either direction. If it ends up being an outer axle bearing I can replace that myself, all other bearings I can't replace myself. They should be done any minute now.

Sounds like when the bearings went out on my 06 V6. My current GT does this a little bit but no where near as bad as on the 06. I'm not sure if Ford uses the same bearings between the 7.5 and the 8.8 rear ends, but I am confident that when the techs tear it apart they will find that it is the pinion bearing. My 06 was in 4 times for the same thing all within a few thousand miles. They finally replaced the entire rear with one whole new assembly from the factory and it went away. Happily it wasn't 2k more and the car was off lease and going back to the dealership.

Well, I got word from the shop and it was in fact the pinion bearing. They never finished it up so its going to be there over night and we will see tomorrow afternoon how things went.
