So I was searching trying to figure this out, but I couldn't find anything on it. I was wondering what would be involved in swapping out the halogen housings for the projector headlights in the new 5.0s. I am looking to pick up a mustang, and the projectors are a must on my list.

I'm deciding whether or not I want to buy new or used, and if I find the perfect used 5.0, minus the projectors used, I want to know if I should jump on it or not.

So my question then is, what is involved in this switch? The obvious: The housings, ballast, ignitors, HID bulbs... anything else? Is it essentially plug and play, or is there some wiring modification required? Has anyone done this yet?

Thanks for the help guys! :D

You are going to want aftermarket if you cannot find one factory equiped. Not only are the housings different, but the underhood body electrical harness, the underhood and in car fuse boxes are different, Just about everything.

Cool! I was wondering that myself lol. Except the other way. I hate the look of the hid projectors and wanted to potentially swap to regular headlights if i ended up buying the car with projector housings.
Though the HIDs are growing on me. I know they perform way better but i dont know if i can deal with the way the housings look.

Also I have looked for factory HIDs for my mustang and I have not been able to even find them on the internet for the 2011's 12' I would assume you would have to go to the dealer and that means about 1,000+ probably just for the headlight housings themselves

I actually went ahead and called my dealer to get a price on them, it was about $1250 for the headlight assembly. That means the housing, ballast, ignitors, bulbs, everything you need. Which isn't too bad. But its a bummer there is no easy way to just swap them out.

Interesting. I'm the complete opposite. I hate the way the tradition halogen housing looks. It looks so old school and out dated to me. The projector housing is such a huge improvement IMO.

I think retrofitting your OEM headlights with projectors is the way to go. Better materials, attention to detail and fabrication than the OEM HIDS and you can customize the headlights any way you want. I had my headlights done by sickhids.com for $580.00. Now this means you will need to have backup headlights. Get some from ebay, or better still, get the OEMs from craigslist or ebay, and have those modded. If you can separate the cover from the headlights, you can do this yourself for about $350.00. Here is a utube video of my lights done by Brian at sickhids.com

Here is a picture of my headlights, installed:

The wiring was very professional and the installation instructions were very easy to understand. The cutoff at the top of the haedlights is very sharp, and these headlights throw a fantastic beam of light, but it does not blind the driver in front of you like some of the cheap aftermarket headlights. Other installers wanted $1000.00 to $1200.00 for the retrofit. My only problem is that Brian is so busy, with over 60 clients at any one time, that his backlog is big.

THANK YOU!
I dont know why i never though of this option lol. They came out great!
