Hi all.

I signed up this site for one reason and this is it. I'm trying to get as much info as possible and hopefully you guys can help me. I'm a rookie at this so bear with me, but I'll try to give as much info as I can.

My question: Best muffler/option for my car?

As stated, it's a 1993 Tbird LX with a 3.8L V6. True dual is not an option as there is no room, but I still want the dual look, so I'll definitely get a split dual.

Right now, everything is pretty much stock. However, last year I did have old muffler taken off as well as the resonator and had a Flowmaster Delta 40 put on.

I've done a ton of internet searching and anything about my car is so freaking hard to find. It doesn't have as many options as a Mustang. I've heard some great things about Magnaflow for V6s but I've also heard some good things about Flowmaster, but I'm trying to see if I can find a deep sound and get it as close to a V8 as possible, and right now the Flowmaster I have now just doesn't quite get there.

I hope I explained enough. Any opinions/comments/questions would be appreciated. Thanks.

With the '92-'97 fuel tank, there is more than enough room to run dual pipes all the way to the rear. However, my recommendation for the best sound out of your 3.8L would be the following:

2-1/4" downtubes into a pair of 2-1/4" Magnaflow/Carsound catalytic converters, a 18" long Magnaflow DISO muffler mounted in the stock resonator location, single 3" past the fuel tank, splitting to dual 2.5" pipes with turndowns at the rear bumper. Check out TCCOA for sound clips. No matter what you do, it will never sound like a V8, but the setup outlined above will make some noise at WOT without sounding "ricey".

The shop I talked to said replacing the catalytic converters wouldn't really make much of a difference, (I'm pretty rural, so shop options are extremely limited, but this guy does exhaust systems for a living), he noted that my best bet would be to increase the overall pipe size. I asked him about a muffler in the resonator location, but he said for what I'm looking for it's not a good idea.

And pardon the noob, but TCCOA?

Like I said though, I'm just trying to weigh all my options and do it right. I love this car (I'm lucky to call it my first car) and am slowly working on transforming it into a bad@$$ bird. Thanks.

The shop you talked to is off base in his opinions.

I ran a setup similar to what I outlined above on my Splitport swapped '94 LX from 2002-'10.

And this is on my XR7. As you can see, there is plenty of room for dual pipes through the '92-'97 style fuel tank. These are dual 2-1/2" pipes. Dual 3" pipes can/have been done in the past as well.

Nah, I'm sorry, but there's absolutely no room under mine for true dual pipes, mine's not nearly as roomy as your pics are (man I wish it was). My resonator space is also considerably smaller than that (and much more square)

It's just something with the 93s, LOL.... Mine is always different than what I can find from similar years.

Post pics. Trust me, unless someone installed a '89-'91 fuel tank on your '93, you have the same amount of space. The floor pan/trans tunnel remained the same during the entire '89-97 MN12 production run, with the exception of a hump above the fuel sending unit in the passenger side rear seat pan which appeared around '92-'93. I've been building MN12's for over a decade. I own six currently, and have owned a total of twenty-four. I go by "racecougar" on TCCOA, SCCOA, TBU, etc. Take a look.

I don't have any pics of what it looks like now and the weather is **** outside right now so I can't do that. But every place I've talked to has said that there is no room for true duals. I'll get a split dual for sure, though, similar to what you have in your first pic. I'll call the guy and talk to him again though.

But every place I've talked to has said that there is no room for true duals.
That's just because they are lazy and don't want to put any effort into it. Regardless, a single 3" through the fuel tank area will be plenty for a NA 3.8L.

Thanks for the link, that opened a few links a I hadn't found before and everything keeps leading back to Magnaflow. I'll probably keep the stock cat converters on there for price, but I am going to follow up on the shop about a Magnaflow.

Completely agree with that. Op go to another shop if you have one in your area it sounds like the shop you went to just want to do a quick easy job so shop around.

Most of the other places are chain shops, which I'm not too keen on. I already think they overcharged me when I got the Flowmaster put on. This guy has done work for my Dad before and he was satisfied with it, and my Dad is hard to please. I'm really leaning towards the midmounted Magnaflow. I found a couple clips and it sounds great.

OK, I emailed a copy of the first picture that you posted to the shop, explained to them that that was what I wanted with a Magnaflow, and they said no problem. It's scheduled for Tuesday.

Thanks for the input guys, I appreciate it.
