So im planning on a dual exhaust, and with kits already being pricey (as well as living in CA) is there any way I could put together a less than legal exhaust with brackets? Im mechanically inclined and have all the tools necessary. I'd also be saving a bunch on labor doing it myself. Questions/comments/concerns?

im selling a super 44 catback for cheap :), only thing muffler are dumped but with a turn downs...only thing you would need is to modify your existing midpipe or get one that legal for CA...of course any catback can be made to fit, just need to take to a good shop :)

if you have a welder and stuff you would def save some money and bending your own piping

You can buy a midpipe, mufflers, and tips then put it together yourself. Most midpipes come with flanges then you could just pick up some gaskets/bolts and have flanges welded to the inlet of each muffler. Then either use exhaust clamps to attach the muffler outlets to the tips or have flanges welded to the outlets of the mufflers and the tips. Or if you happen to have a welder and angle grinder (to remove the rear flanges of the midpipe).. Well you see where I'm going with that. I wouldn't weld the midpipe to the exhaust manifolds, but you could weld the rest together if you're able to do it yourself.

Are you wanting high flow cats with your new setup? If so, that'd be kinda tricky to do change back to stock because you'd have to have it come apart before the stock cats. It's possible yes, but also difficult.

I would just get some v-band clamps from Jegs, cut your y-pipe before it joins (keeping the stock cats). Then put new exhaust on via the clamps. You'll have to get two extra collars for the clamps to put onto your stock system, that way you can just undo the clamps, swap out the exhaust, then tighten them back up.

I like this idea. Would a dual setup (with no midpipe) for a GT fit, since there is nothing determining the width between the duals? I would just hang it wherever it needed to go. On the other hand, will an aftermarket header-back exhaust for the GT bolt up to the V6 exhaust mani? Because then I could simply switch out the two for smog.

Btw, I wanna join the broke-ass college kid club. Sounds like fun

Well that's the thing, in CA, duals, high flow cats, and basically anything other than the stock setup is illegal and shops wont touch it. That's why id set it up DIYing
That's not true at all, as long as everything precat is not touched its completly legal. just cut right after the downstream cats and weld in whatever midpipe you want (ie custom h-pipe, x-pipe, divorced duals, modified prochamber). Mine is cut aft cat with a modified MAC Prochamber and thrush welds mufflers and just smoged her last month, past effortlessly

I'm pretty sure that would work fine. Just let the midpipe width determine where you cut the stock y-pipe.

And join up man, plenty of broke ass college kids out there. The sig is font size 4, Comic Sans MD font, centered, and the color that's closest to the color of your school.

Are there not any aftermarket CARB approved cats?
