Hey guys, I just wrote off my 99 mustang so im looking to buy another one. I plan on getting a GT this time and I know NOTHING about the GT's, and wanted to know the differences from year range to year range in terms of engine and other things that matter :p For example 94-98 mustang v6's were single port 99-2004 were split port +40-50hp, thats the kinda info im looking for.

I expect the max ill be able to spend is around 10k so unfortunately no cobras, but that should be enough to bag myself a quality GT.

Thanks in advance guys,

You can get a 99-04 gt with under 60k for 10 grand. Look for a STOCK or lightly modded one. The 99-04's i believe have about 260 hp at the crank? Correct me if im wrong.

94-95's are 5.0 pushrod motors. Not sure on stock hp

96-98 are 4.6 NPI SOHC 2V motors. 215hp with a slight bump to 225 for the 98's.

99-04 are 4.6 PI SOHC 2V motors. 260hp

05 + are SHOC 4.6 3V motors. 315hp

Your $10k budget wouldn't rule out 05's in my area so I thru them in there. I can't speak for the 5.0 guys but most of us NPI guys do a PI swap for 1st engine mod. Unless you like the 94-98 body style over the 99-04's I'd look into them just for the PI motor.

Oh ... $10k could still net you a 4V cobra. Just not an 03 or 04 Termi.

Id love it if I could find one in that range, thanks a lot for the help, that helped a lot actually. Ive found a few ~2002 gt's for about 7500-11k, not a hint of a cobra yet except the termi, but the guy wanted 17k

What are the stats on the earlier cobras? I found a couple 97/98's

I beleive the 96-98 cobra's are 305hp at the crank.

If you can bag it, go for it. The S197's are much more comfortable than the SN95's. Drove an '05 V6 5-speed last summer and really enjoyed it, if the interior wasn't trashed and it didn't have the classic '05 water leak I might be driving it right now. Enjoy the interior with ergonomics that actually make sense.

im a fan on the sn95s. they run cheap on the price side, and they're old enough that people have done some nice mods. for example i bought mine for pennies compared to some of these newer mustangs and itll eat them up. You can find a nice sn95 for 7-9k with plenty of foot power :)

05 water leak, thats the first ive heard of it. Where do they leak, Ive been looking at a few 05's.

Oh, and tell me about it.. Ive never seen a car get a recall notice on its cup holders until the 99 mustang!! smh

While I dont disagree with anything you posted, I personally would rather a closer to stock car for a few reasons. Mostly so that I know exactly what all has been done to the car, there is no guessing. Also if the person put that many mods into the car, they probably didnt drive it very nicely. And if anyone is going to be romping on my new car, its gonna be me :p

Furthermore, Id like to put the mods on my self :p Its fun.

I had an 05 v6 5 speed for a few years. The 2 big issues I had with it was about 4 months after I got it the guage cluster went to hell. Speedo was all out of wack.

The waterfall effect, as i've heard it called, leaks from under the dash on the passenger side. Pretty much after a hard rain you will go out for a drive and as soon as you get on the gas good water will flood out of there onto the floor of your car. It's a lot of water too.

94-95 GT = 5.0L - 215HP
96-97 GT = 4.6L NPI - 215HP
98 GT = 4.6L NPI - 225HP
99-04 GT = 4.6L PI - 260HP - Bullitt versions = 265HP.

94-95 Cobra = 5.0L - 240HP
96-98 Cobra = 4.6L DOHC - 305HP
99-01 Cobra = 4.6L DOHC - 315HP
03-04 Cobra = Supercharged 4.6L DOHC - 390HP.

03-04 Mach 1 = 4.6L DOHC - 305HP, but underrated, more like 330HP.

whichever you decide if you want a new edge pi or the older sn95 you will fall in love with the 4.6 sound. i upgraded this past year from my v6 to a v8 and ill never look back i still get decent gas mileage and the torque feels great. sure the s197 body style is more comfortable but they are much slower because they weigh alot for only making 300hp and 300tq. with small boltons i put a few cars on those body style. if you could afford a mach 1 i would go that route tho because that is the dual overhead cam 4.6 and makes significant power for being naturally aspirated. sure the terminator is faster but it has irs which doesnt respond well to alot of abuse.
