Whats up guys, I've got an 86 GT and Im trying to figure out what this piece is so I can replace it. It's a plastic clip under the dash, that is double sided with teeth in the middle, and the small teeth lock it onto a skinny white cylinder that moves as you press in the clutch pedal. It is located right above the clutch pedal. Ive googled as much as I can come up with but I cant find it for the life of me. The piece on my car is stripped and it's causing my clutch to engage, when the pedal is almost to the floor. (new clutch and flywheel, king cobra cable and quadrant)

Soulds like the quadrant. Do you have pictures

That piece has nothing to do with the clutch dis/engagment. All it does is it wont let the car start if the clutch is not engaged. You can jump these together so that the car can start without the clutch being depressed. Sounds like the cable is worn and stretched or your quadrent(if stock) is worn out and isn't allowing the clutch to realese enough.

Stang6r is right that has nothing to do with engagment. Try pulling your clutch petal up with your toe. That will engage the factory adjust mechanism on the quadrant. If that doesn't solve the problem you have and issue. Either the cable is stretched, the teeth on the quadrant are stripped, the aluminum bearing retainer in the tranny may have a groove in it preventing smooth clutch operation

I would also try pulling the clutch pedal up to readjust it. If the cable is new, you may need to get a firewall adjuster, so you can dial in where you want the clutch to engage.

^nope i have an adjustable cable and aftermarket quadrent no firewall adjuster. but i recommend getting one cause its a pita to get under the car and adjust it everytime you need/want to.

OP i would try adjusting the cable tighter and see what that nets you. and if you have the money get a firewall adjuster so you make it alot easier on you.

Either of these two kits is the best bet. The second kit link I added is the one I would reccomend for it comes with the adjustable firewalll piece. it is 20$ more because the piece is in the box. I did mine last summer and it made a big difference. My car never grinds or misses 2nd or 3rd now no matter how hard or fast I shift. I am running the stock clutch with 185K miles on it. Well so I am told from the original owner I bought my car off of. I bought it bone stock not even a cd player in the car. It came with the stock stereo that did not work. The guy told me it was stock clutch he never replaced so I took his word on it. Before I did the BBK clutch quadrant my car grinded in 2nd, 3rd, and reverse. after a hour of work installing it I have never had any issues since.
