hey all, last night I broke either my oil pump shaft or oil pump having some fun coming off a highway exit ramp. I was only a few miles from home so I drove her there, prolly shouldn't have but F__k it. I have a buddy with a 347 kit but he prolongs everything and this is my daily so Im getting ready to start buying parts to build a nice 306. Im just wondering what the cheapest decent pistons would be that will work with my tfs TW 170's with 61cc chambers. As of now I have 700 bucks to start burning and want your guys opinion on what you would do for a cheap/mild performance build.
So far im thinking I will do a TFS stage 2 cam, what ever pistons you recommend, full gasket kit/ pump/pump shaft/ timing chain from american muscle. Not sure if I will be able to reuse my lifters but prolly not. I only went a few miles and I kept the rpm very low, it didnt really sound like it was grinding to bad but Im yet to know till I get it to the machine shop. just wondering what you would do if you were on a tight budget

Mahle pistons with the TW valve reliefs are your best bet. 700 something bucks for all the pistons, rings and clips.

Just buy bearings, have it balanced and put it together.

And get an Anderson N51 if you can.

Look for a 5.0 HO short block to put your stuff on. Machine work alone will be close if not over $700. For a daily driver you could use the Trick Flow Stage 1 or Comp XE266HR & still have a very powerfull, very driveable combo.

yea 700 is a little steep for pistons I was trying to keep them in the 280-350 dollar range, would you rather a tfs 1 for a daily driver. Not to sure about the specs of the tfs 2 I just figured it would give a little more power up top, either way Im going to stick with one of those just because they are cheap and they work lol. Im looking at dss or probe pistons right now they are pretty affordable, anybody use them ?

I've used Probe pistons in several builds, never had any problems. Just freshened up an 427w that we built several years ago, 100's of passes, pistons looked great!

Check out the new low cost DSS Forged pistons.
D.S.S. E Series forged pistons

Always had good luck with Total Seal!

]I recently rebuilt my 306 for around 1300. Bore/hone and ground crank down. Rods/pistons weight matched then the short block was assembled total coming out to 535 at the shop. I used probe FPS series pistons with total seal rings that came with my complete rebuild kit. I reused all top end part as the motor was previously rebuilt. I also bought ARP rod and head bolts. Running it without oil may have ruined the rods faces, crank thrust surface, pushrods and rockers.

Rings are often overlooked in a build, when they're one of the most important keys to making power. Engine efficiency is determined by how well your air pump is sealed up, and efficiencey is power. Although they're not cheap, I used Total Seal with a gapless second.

What's "not cheap" if you don't mind me asking?

And what he said is very true ^^^ Rings are very important

Good rings range from 80 bucks up to 400 for a set. Composition, coatings, style, size, etc, all add to cost. Go with a DSS or Probe FORGED piston. DO NOT skimp on pistons, get a good unit and be done with it. My saying is do it once, do it right, done.
Cheap and engine rebuild rarely add up to an engine worth it's salt for very long.
