So a month ago I started having issues with a really bad noise coming from my engine. It sounded like a rod knock and many people diagnosed it as that. This is the thread for it: http://www.moddedmustangs.com/forums/99-04/308393-knocking-noise-2000-2100-rpm.html

So I decided to pull the engine and see what needed to be done. We dropped the oil pan and found metal shavings and even full pieces of metal. Also there was some orange plastic. We removed the valve covers and timing cover and discovered that there was damage to the timing chain. The tensioner spring broke and the metal plate that presses down on the chain guide broke off which was the piece of metal I found in the oil screen. A lso the chain was pretty rough too. The plastic chain guides broke apart and explains for the orange plastic as well.

We checked the crank and there was no damage to it and no play in the pistons so we concluded that it was not a rod bearing or anything related to that.

We got the car back together and right away we could hear the noise. I really hope it is something stupid, but I really need your help. I just spent $700+ on the timing chain kit, new clutch, flywheel resurfacing, gaskets, etc. The link to this post is here: http://www.moddedmustangs.com/forums/99-04/310485-timing-chain-replacement-kit.html

At this point I am really considering just beating the **** out of this engine and just picking up a junk yard engine for 500$ and just use whats left from mine and sell what I can off this engine. I really don't want it to come to this, plus I don'y want to get stuck anywhere with my car completely crapping out.

Today I drove 100 miles for a cruise and car show. The noise is not always present (can not hear at idle, lower than 2k RPM, higher rpm(could just be because car is really loud)). I have a video from my gopro of the noise. When I get on it there is no power loss and the car preforms better than it ever has. I just really wish I could solve this problem. The video below you can clearly hear the noise and when I get on it I still have all the power I am supposed to have.

Some guy in here had or has the same problem and also one of my friends car did the same thing My friend kept driving it till it locked up had the noise for 3 days but he drove the crap out of it He had chunks on the oil pan so I would check every internal part but that's just from what I saw and what he has told me

Sounds to me like something in the timing chain assembly.. You rebuilt it but before you scrap the engine I'd pull it out and take another look. Probably a stupid mistake with the chain guides
Someone said it could be a lifter.

needs a timing chain and guide set...guaranteed. not too hard. pull the timing cover off and you will see the guides are probly worn clear through. that's where you got the plastic in the oil and the metal shavings from under the guides, its aluminum. pull the oil pan off to ass the pieces will be stuck in the pickup tube screen
I think you can get the cloytes timing set from American muscle now. chains, tensioners, guides should all you need. I have the special cam holding tool i'd sell you. I had to wait a week for the parts stores to order them. I've done two timing sets
edit: just seen that you rebuilt it? you should have replaced this stuff during an overhaul.

Yes I just did that and still have the noise. I had the whole engine out.

maybe something came loose? that sounds exactly like mine did when It needed a timing kit

I don't see how it could. I think its a lifter.

can you replicate the noise park / neutral by revving it? It you can, get a large screw driver and put it in the area you think the noise is coming from. You'll be able to pin point it that way. I had a similar noise and it was the timing chain guides had worn though. There was another time I had a similar noise and it was the catalytic converter was breaking up and rattling.

I just did the timing chain. I also have no cats. I will try the screw driver trick again. Before we diagnosed that is was coming from the timing cover.

You may also be able to pinpoint which cylinder by pulling plugs. If the noise goes away, at least you have figured out which cylinder it is.

I had a noise that only showed up after 2000 rpm. I finally took it for a redline beat lap and came back convinced it was a bearing. Pulled the motor and sure enough. Excessive silicone from the shop rebuild had melted and filled the bottom of the oil pan. Plugged the oil pickup and spun a bearing. I got a replacement motor for $350.

I disconnected the coils one by one and the noise was still there.

I would think the sound of a spun bearing would still be there slightly even when that cylinder isn't hitting....?? that's just me though

Anybody have any clue as to why my gas milage is really good. I am really suspicious. I calculated 22 MPG. Is it possible that the car is not getting enough fuel and therefore causing the noise?

I am running Bama 93 Race Tune. I have tried to tune it back to stock just to see if the noise went away and it did not. Anybody have any idea?

do you have a stethescope? if not goto harbor friehght and get 1 for 5 bucks

you could have a wrist pin knock. yes i know its uncommon but sounds like a rod knock from the outside the engine bay, but actually is a double knock if you listen very carefully with a stethescope and if it isnt you will be able to figure out if its a top end bottom end or timing problem IMO
