I'm in the process of building a 306 and I have all the components except the distributor and ignition, any suggestions are well appreciated. The engine will be fuel injected 5 speed LX. Internals will consist of stock rods new stock crank, DSS pistons, TFS cam (01), TFS heads with 58 cc chamber, TFS upper and lower intake, 24# injectors, Accufab AFPR, 65 or 70mm throttle body and EGR spacer, TFS timing chain kit, TFS 1.7 RR, TFS pushrods and lifters, etc

for the distributor,
i like the mallory unilite ( LED pickup )
they have a perfect off/on signal that they are sending to the ignition,
unlike magnetic ones, they have more of a graduating on/off signal

they only problem is the lights go out ocassionally, so you should always have a spare in your glove box

Is magnetic pickup the same as magnetic trigger? I'm looking at part# MSD8456 at summit. Can you run a tach with this distributor? it says no tach drive.

I've done a little research and was wondering if this setup would be good, Summit distributor (#850300; $250) ignition box, prepare for supercharger in the future, (#850604; $270) coil (#853011; $33) and wiring harness (#850518; $20). Any suggestions welcome, thanks for your time.

Led pickups use optics to work. With led's there is virtually no delay in the on and off status. With magnets there is that slight delay while the magnetic field is building. Not that it matters either way. The delay is so minor it really has no bearing on how the ignition works. I have the MSD setup because that what I always have used and they make good products..

ya when you were little and you were sitting in line with your mom at the grocerie store in line to check out, and you sit and put your finger in front of the little optic signal to make the little convaor belt stop......thats the same as a LED pickup :D

LED is like a hall effect sensor (getting into serious ignition stuff) its a consitant on/off signal

magnetic (like you said) have that small amount of time to build a magnetic feild so its not consitant on/off so it looks like a wave

(totally agreeing with ya)
