So...looking for input.

I currently have been DD a 2012 Boss 302. Yeah yeah yeah. lol. Needless to say, living down a mile long gravel road with some pretty steep hills to slide down, I ended up thankfully being able to borrow a truck this week after we got slammed with snow and ice like none other.

Now, I don't want to rely on my awesome neighbors/family/friends with this. I want to pick up something nice, cheap(under 5-6K) that I can get a small payment on but have. Would be nice incase I have to tear the Boss apart for a few days to not feel rushed.

So I was looking around, AWD seems to be popular for the snow. In my price range, the only AWD cars seem to be the ugly ass suburu wagon and the Audi A6 1.8T, A6 2.7T, A6 3.0, etc.

Since the other thread has me discouraged, even though I find a mint 2000 A6 2.7T with 108K miles, I would like input.

I also was looking at a 4X4 F150 of the 1997-1999 range. I looked at maybe an F-350 7.2L Turbo Diesel 4x4(just hate driving such massive trucks) and a few late 90s Ford Rangers in a 4x4.

Also, sorta, I really like jeep wranglers, but the ones remotely in my price range are all little i4s. Not sure I want an i4...Going from a 444HP V8 to a jeep with a tiny I4...bleh. Am I wrong, is it really amazing?

Suggestions are welcome. As mentioned, would prefer AWD, but appears 4X4 is far easier to obtain and work on in my budget.

Are BMW as bad as they claim? Found a nice 2001 BMW X5 4.4i I am sure I can talk them down some on. 250K miles at $6K. I have a feeling I can work them down a little.

Also, what about a 2000 Jeep Cherokee 4.7L V8 4X4 with 160K miles for just under 4K. I am sure I can knock them down some. Seems like it'd do well through the snow?

also a 1994 Ford Ranger 4X4 at 3K but no idea what the real mileage is. Car shows 20,660, but must have more. Odemeter doesn't physically have the ability to read higher. Seems sketchy?

lastly was a 1998 Ford F-150 4X4 Dually for just under 4K with 160K miles. Has the 4.6L V8. My only concern here, is MPG is going to suck something awful, based on the 1997 F-150 4X2 with the 4.6L I once had. I averaged 10-11mpg. Unless that was a fluke truck?

I can say don't get the BMW either. That's a 14 year old car with a quart mil on the clock. That's just asking for (expensive) trouble. I'd rock a early 90's ranger for the right price. I didnt' care for the rounded body style. I had a 89 4x4 extended cab with a 2" lift, 5 speed, 32" MT's, and a $20 cherry bomb glass pack. I put that thing through hell. I wouldn't even sweat the mileage. The 2.9 and 4.0 v6's are pretty damn good in those. I tried and tried to kill my 2.9, but never could. The jeep cheroke would be nice too.

Yeah the BMW worried me.

Good to hear on the others.

What about a 1998 f-150 4x4 with the 4.6l for 3K? Has 130K miles. Has been sitting a while so they still might deal some to get rid of it.

Looks good, not sure if there might be some surprise when I see it. Is the 5 speed manual so wondering if the clutch is all jacked up since it has been reduced almost 1200 since the photos were taken. I'd be looking $50 a month or so tho. Which makes it easily affordable.

The other I wanna look at is that cherokee. I want a truck more but the Cherokee is really nice looking.

I really want a wrangler. I just cannot for the life of me pay the higher price for such a small engine.

I'll trade you my '92 Jeep Cherokee Laredo for your Boss. She runs like a charm. I6 4.0 liter.

But really... your options are all over the place, SUV, pickup, sedan.... do you have an idea which one you'd prefer?

i had a wrangler, it was a 4.0 but the 2.5 do their jobs well.. id take a wrangler in a heartbeat no matter what, just not in an auto.. you can go literally anywhere in that 4cyl. they are capable of pretty much whatever you can throw at them daily, not like rock climbing but they are absolute beasts in the snow. plus you wouldn't be ashamed to drive it year round either. they are great in the summer and winter. if it has a heater, it will kick absolute ass. wranglers heaters are unreal. like a freakin desert in your car. IMO i wouldn't even think about anything else but the wrangler… somedays i wish i had mine back.. i mean i dropped like 7 grand into it lol. but then i turn on my car and I'm rewarded lol. i would do anything to have both

Haha. No thanks :).

Not really. I don't have a reason to buy any of the three types specifically. I don't need a truck, dad has an 07 tundra I can borrow anytime. Small car vs suv would be MPG but the AWD small cars get crappy MPG.

I found a 2000 jeep grand cherokee with the 4.7L V8. Is a 4 speed auto, but reading online it is technically a 6 speed. Has two 2nd gears. Also has a 5th gear that isn't used. The 2001 uses the same trans but with 5th gear enabled. Any jeep dealer can flash the 2000 with the 2001 software. If this one doesn't have it already.

Gonna look at it Thursday and probably buy it.

Haha see I don't want a reason to spend money on nodding a second car. I know I'd do that with the wrangler. Just gonna get the Cherokee with the V8 for half the price as the wrangler with the I4.

true statement… my dad has a wrangler that he doesn't mod and has hella fun in it winter and summer. i will have one again lol I'm determined.. but just for winter, a cherokee woundnt be a bad choice

I vote Jeep. My wife and I are looking at the 86-01 cherokee's currently for winter/light trail beater. I want a wrangler from whatever year but she wants enough room for our dogs too and with a great dane weighing 170lbs+ and a pit bull we need room lol. It helps for at or under 6k you can find a lot of models of Jeep that have some nice mods on them too.

My wife's father in law has both a Expedition(2wd) and F-150 4x4 from the early to late 90's, I forget the exact years, and both have over 200k miles with no major repairs needed so far. He gets around steep hills in them during the winter easily even in the 2wd expedition.

Yeah, since it is just for winter and down time for the mustang for mods, I am not worried about getting a wrangler. I actually want a Kawasaki Ninja more, but I have to be smart and logical and buy a 4X4 car if I am going to have the Boss.

Yeah what you mentioned interests me a little. I have a dog that I'd like the ability to take places. Right now, he is a no go period in the stang. Cannot do that too the poor Boss.

That is my second choice, if I can't get the jeep or it there is an issue with it etc. The 1998 Ford F-150. I am still worried though that the clutch is bad or goofed up. Mainly since the truck has been sitting so long and has dropped so much in price. That or more people than I thought can't drive a stick in Ohio. :p

my fam had a 99 expedition.. had 300K on that beast and it pulled our ranger uphill in 7 inches of snow with the breaks on the ranger lol. thing was sick.. woulda been my vehicle and lifted on some 35s now but we traded it in on a 2010 expedition. we will always own one. excellent vehicles

The transmissions behind those 4.7s weren't great.

Can you not do a clutch on a truck? That would be a good way to get a good deal on a vehicle. I got a little toyota pickup for pretty cheap because it needed a clutch, 4 hours later and $100 it was running awesome.

I couldn't find one cheap. They seem to hold value really well around here.

find a jeep Cherokee the square ones with the 4.0l straight six and buy one it will serve you well
why the 6 over the V8? There do not seem to be any wih the 4.0 around for sale in my price range, all are newer. lol.

Do you have anything to backup the trans not being great? From what I can tell, regardless of the engine displacement, the same trans was used. The 2000 has the same auto trans as the 2001-2004. I've seen nothing but praise for it.

Sure, there is the normal issues, but search for 2011+ 5.0 mustangs with manual trans and you'd think they were the biggest POS every made, yet I've had two different MT-82 equipped mustangs that have been perfect.

That being said, I have no issue with driving a manual anything. I just like the idea of the cherokee more, as the F-150 will average if I am lucky around 11-12MPG if I am lucky. Say that having had an identical F-150 of the 1997 year just in a 4X2.

IIRC the grand cherokee had the v8 the regular cherokee's had 6's. I personally don't like the grand cherokee styling and you can always stuff a v8 into an xj with enough patience.
Thanks.

Forgot to udate. The Cherokee was a bust. Blown engine. The f-150 was a bust, rusted to hell in more ways than anyone wants to know.

Ended up with a little subaru legacy AWD. Nothing fancy but drives fantastic in the snow. That was the purpose so :D

My reasoning behind the 4.7 not having a great transmission was because I had 3 friends in high school that lost the trannys in their Grand Cherokees. All 3 were the 4.7.

And, for a while my boss and I were considering buying them off of craigslist and replacing transmissions and selling them. I remember one day there were 4 new listings of different 4.7 grand cherokees that needed transmissions. You can pick them up for less than $2500 with just over 100k miles. Just needs a tranny rebuild.

So my reasoning was experience.

Nice view, now if only that beater wasn't in the way :)
I am sure that little subaru will work out great in the snow. Our old forester was a breeze to drive in snow.

Haha I know! I wanna drive my baby so bad and Still cant. I might get one day this week. Supposed to be 55. If the snow melts.

Yeah I drove it in the snow yesterday and it was cake. Very happy with the AWD. Makes me a little sad I got the boss 302 over a STI.
