I have a 89 5.0 gt it has the HO motor and does not want to idle until its been running for at least 20 mins. thats 1 problem. the second problem is that it seems to lack power, maby im just over estimating the stock v-8 but i had a z28 that was stock and it seemed faster then my stang. if anyone can point me in the right direction that would be awesome. thanks.

Well, for starters make sure your Idle Air Control motor is hooked up. It is located on the right side (closest to you if you looking at the motor) of the throttle body. If the connector is damaged, or if the wires are fray or damaged, replace those. If its hooked up.. the motor could be bad. This is where i would start.

Well a stock 5.0 was up to par with the 5.7ltr Z28's so if you are for sure that it feels slower there is for sure something going on. Def check the IAC thing for the idle. if the car has catylatic converts they could be clogged. If not then the next thing I would do is a compression check or better yet a leakdown test. If all is good then give the car a full blown tune up and dont leave anything out. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, PCV, fuel filter ect ect.. Oh yeah dont forget to check the timing.. Make sure its set to like 12-14 degrees. After you get the car to run right then you can advance it if you want till it starts to ping then back off abit. Whats a good max advance you can run on a 5.0 guys? Its been awhile since I adjusted timing manually for power gains, I have a PMS system so I run at base 10 then make my adjustments on the handheld.. What like 14-16 degrees max..?

Hey a fellow PMS owner ;)

As far as manually bumping the timing. The computer wouldnt and "shouldnt" allow any more than 26 degrees total advance. I wouldnt go much more than 14 degrees base with the electronic advance disconnected.

do you mean 26 degrees on top of the base timing? 26 degrees total sounds like the special olympics...too retarded.

not very likely that its the ECM...but it is very probably a sensor issue. if i had to guess i'd say o2 sensor/s BUT you should Check for Codes to be sure. post up the codes and we'll be glad to help you out with them.
i tryed to pull codes but the scanner i got wont connect to the computer everytime i turn the key on the scanner cuts out... this is a huge bummer its after christmas and i want to start on my car and im still stuck on this same problem.

Dont you have to have a OBDII computer to use a scanner? A 1989 Mustang has OBDI. Thats prob why its not working..

no its a obd 1 scanner
Then find another car with a OBDI computer and hook it up and make sure the scanner is working. I just use the jumper wire method.

dont think you need a scanner anyways you can use a test light on the right termanls and just count the lights i think
That would be the jumper method...

is the pcv valve working properly?? and sometimes u have to check everything. thats just the way it goes. for one symptom u could have 10 differnt things that could be causing it..but start with the easy things first then go from there. like he said check your compression with the engine cold the rings could be shot but when the engine warms up and those fordged pistons warm up and expand the engine might idle fine..
