If its your daily driver, I would do these (and i'm no expert, this is just what i would do)

A cat back (gotta have a good sounding car, borla stingers are amazing.)
Gears (usually 3.73 for manual, 4.10 for auto)
Get a tuner (SCT tuner on americanmuscle.com comes with free bama tunes for life)
That should leav you would around $500 depending on where you buy stuff from. With the $500 I would get full length subframe connecters. Then maybe a small visual upgrade (mach1 chin spoiler, about 100 bucks from americanmuscle.)

Each to their own but personally id rather start big (given cash in hand) then go small.

For example. You have 2k in hand to spend. Whats easier to save up for/buy. Something/one "big" thing that costs you 2k, or some gears, tuner, etc that run you a couple 100 each.

Id say blower, nitrous, something along those lines. Then do the little stuff. Where as you can get gear, plenum, intake, tb, blah blah blah with that 2k. Then if you ever decide you want a blower or good/properly setup nitrous setup youre not thinking oh **** now I need to save up or spend this big chunk. Its already spent and out of the way.

Not only that youll see a bigger gain from the little stuff given you do the big stuff first.

Also depends on what you use the car for, what your plans are, etc.

$1500 for everything is very hard to do. It can be done but most are lucky to purchase cheap head units that are still in good shape. If you're looking for a head unit with low mileage then you won't find one for cheap. If you feel comfortable with buying one with 30-40k miles on it then sure you can probably pick it up for around $600. I bought my V1 S trim with 3.6 pulley, discharge tube, bracket assembly, oil feed/drain assembly, and Vortech air intake used with 4,000 mi for $2,000. Added a used maf and injectors. Bought new svt focus pump, belt, powerpipe with filter, spark plugs, boost gauge, wideband gauge. All this stuff equalled another $950. Then I had a custom aluminim mini catch can made for $60. So $3,000 before install and tune. That is absolutely everything you would need. Of course you don't need to do a powerpipe, catch can, or gauges so if you don't want those items you could save yourself around $525. Also if you buy a used powerpipe and fuel pump you could probably save another $100. If you want to add an itnercooler that will be another $300. I would say you need to budget about $2500 for a decent used setup.

If I could go back to the beginning I would have saved up for a nice centri first....trust me with 2k you can get everything you need for f/i.

trust me ive spent some money on my mods and like ajm said...saving up for 2k is not that easy as crap seems to always come up ( at least for me) and if you add up my mods i could have wwwwaaaayyyy more hp then I do now...and then maybe I would be a post 97 takiller :(

i learned from this process though and on the next go around..im going f/i first :yes

I completely agree, but sometimes it is hard to spend that kind of money all at once. I had about $7k in parts and labor spent on my car before I added the supercharger. I spent that much over 4.5 years, but I was also in college full time. Buying all the stuff I needed for my supercharger took me 5 months, but now I was employed full time. I just hate seeing a large some of money leaving my account so I buy parts slowly over time.

im down with the idea of getting a lot of booze and drugs and some girls who are dtf and have a sick party party. as for the car, keep saving for the big parts. the small crap adds up to nothing and with 400 hp your 3.27's in the back will feel like a decent amount of gear.

What are the goals for the car? Everyone always jumps right to power adders when someone asks what to to with money, which is great for a drag car or just a fun street car. But if you want a good handling car for autocross or open track days that money would be much better spent on improving suspension parts. I don't know your plans for the car so just making a suggestion.

smartest advice i could give is if you owe money on the car put your money to pay it off. then deal with the aftermarket parts. so many people blow their motors, trans, rears, and other parts with no money to fix it. for some reason every one thinks that cars braking will happen to some one else, or their setup is plenty safe. i have broken stock motors and built motors in my life time. its part of the game so cash in hand with a slow car, is better than a broken built car with no funds to fix it.

I have to agree with you on this one, Stal. I put out over 6,000 buying my '01 GT, put out another 565 buying my SCT Livewire, next I'm putting out another 575 to buy the complete '03-'04 Cobra bumper from blue oval, since my stocker has an unattractive crack in it.

Right now, I barely have over 300 in spare cash, and would be screwed for a while if I ran into car trouble. I should actually take care of my exhaust first, before any sort of exterior fix. One of my cats has a crack in it, which is throwing a code, and causing an annoying rattle.
