car work done so far: 4.10 gears, JLT intake, bama 87 race tune- originally the car is from south carolina and was driven with a 93 race tune, both from bamachips on an SCT tuner.

1. FUEL GAUGE: the fuel gauge is WAY off, about 90 counter-clockwise, i have to watch the electronic distance to E meter to know how much gas i have left. it does this even when setting the tune back to stock. as of today, i have used a full bottle or 'Seafoam' engine cleaner through the gas tank, as that was suggested. willing to try more if it would seem needed.

2. TEMPERATURE GAUGE: the temp gauge will sometimes go a bit off the hot end of the, and when i check under the hood, water hoses dont feel hotter than they should be, engine heat around the heads and what not isnt too hot either.

3. RADIATOR FAN: my radiator fan some times doesnt kick on by itself (when the car starts or when it heats up). it happens about 1 in 4 times i drive my car (which is frequent, but when it happens i have to kick Max AC on and it brings the fan on and stays on like it normally should.

4. REAR CAR VIBRATIONS: at high speed (about 70 and above) i get vibrations (they get rougher every mph), they feel like theyre coming from the drive shaft or rear axle. and the vibrations can only really be felt at certain degrees in RPM (unavoidable) but mostly when letting off the gas and slowing down (slightly or alot, makes no difference). any speed below that this car can be driven hard and has no other effects like this, if its pulling hard RPM's from a new shift, or burning the tires from first to second and then third, or even while cornering.

5. INTAKE SOUNDS: i have strange rustling sounds in my engine compartment constantly, they usually arent heard til the cars been driven for about 5 minutes. but it sounds like i have sand or really small pieces of plastic being blown around in the inlet system or something. i was guessing the flywheel because its so constant when it starts to happen, cant remember if it ever skips beats (stops for a second or longer), and i also havent seen if its power dependent, so maybe in the next half hour ill go for a drive to narrow some of this stuff down and do a couple free revs.

other than that, i love my car to pieces.

thanks in advance for the help, as this is a Very long read.

Welp...I can tell you first hand that the gauge clusters in these cars can suck. The speedo on mine is completely dead but I'm too cheap to replace it right now. Eventually I'm going to get the cobra gauge cluster.

Have you checked/replaced the thermostat? Also I'm sure there's a temp sensor for the fan so maybe that's on the fritz as well.

As for the rear car vibrations, I had the rear gears replaced in mine @ 70k miles due to bad whining but if you're getting a vibration that could be from the driveshaft. I guess you need to get under there and see if there's much free-play at the rear of the driveshaft.

For the intake sounds, that is an odd one. Kinda difficult to give any sort of answer without a sound clip.

Hope Not

Intake sound anybody else but a blog I read the owner pulled the intake and found that one of the butterfly control plates factory had fractured and was getting ready tobe ingested into the engine and the shaft running through the plates had play in them. Not to alarm you but without hearing it maybe this can isolate it for you. Steeda makes economey delete plates around 190 bones and you will need to update the tune and they have a Billet set 300 bones with NoS ports just FYI. And good luck.

4 sounds like maybe loose driveshaft bolts, maybe a bad u-joint, or maybe a tire imbalance.

+ 1, alos bad wheel bearings can cause vibrations the faster you go....had that happen on my 90LX.

ill go out with a camera in a few hours and get a good recording of the noise. perhaps even the high speed vibration as well.

but as for the gauges and the fan some times not coming on with the start of the vehicle, im definitely going with the computer is just looney, if it was a sensor why would it be almost exactly 1 out of 4 runs, and it couldnt be a thermostat issue, the temp gauge will some times jump half the meter, or just not work at all.

system checks always come up with engine coolant temperature ok.

also, the car came from south carolina in case it was the same car from whatever forum for cheap.

where could i look for these plugs? and i mean that in all seriousness, ive never dealt with nitrous, my guess is somewhere by the injectors

and how do you know the guy ran nitrous? anything else i should know about? haha

Vibrations, funky gauges..... RUSTLING SOUNDS???!!! I'm not a mechanic but that **** doesn't sound like the car is long for this world:eek:

And are you sure about the gears? I was pretty sure there weren't any 4.11's for our cars....only 4.10's. Pretty sure 4.11's are from the old days

#11 ·
yeah im sorry, haha theyre 4.10's. before this car ive only owned 60's cars.

i hope theres nothing too serious with this car, the guy i bought it off of said the car was fine mechanically.

im just hoping i dont have to replace gauges and sensors, and just a computer issue with the car. but if it comes to parts being replaced, then id be glad to at least have things narrowed down.

Good luck, I hope everything works out for you:)

Fuel gauge is probably off because the cross over tube isn't flowing fuel from the right saddle tank to the left driver side one for float.

Could also be that the previous owner played with adding fuel if it was a nitrous car. if he was in the tank at all the pump float could easily have been tweaked. Check that as well.

Rear vibration trouble sounds like drive shaft. start there, that's the easiest. Have balance checked etc..

are you saying theres two different areas in the fuel tank? and the side that has the fuel gauge floater isnt getting any fuel?

i feel like im missing something here.

how would i go about solving that sort of issue?

#20 ·
so are you suggesting i pull the tank out?

there is something funny with my gas tank, i cant fill the tank normally at a gas pump, it constantly backs up and shuts the nozzle off, even when the tank is (supposedly) empty. i have to turn the gas pump nozzle upsides down and the fuel flows fine.

#16 ·
i have a gas gauge problem to and but mine is a bad sensor in the fuel pump and the solution is for me to get the pump replaced, im not because the pump works fine and i rather have to calculate how much gas i have vs having to pay $900 for a new pump. So that may be it for you, im not shur exactly what its called but its a sensor in the pump it self

4 is most likley a drive shaft being bent. I had that same problem on mine. It would be fine until you hit one certain point then it would start shaking. Then it would get worse the faster you went. Bought an aluminum drive shaft and everything is golden now

just drove my car around town for alot of errands, parking, turning the car off, yada yada yada.. (camera needs to be charged so no pics/video yet)

and it appears that now my temp gauge is upside down, perfectly mirrored... it seemed to be pretty far to the right at one of my stops (as usual, checked the fan, it was on, checked usual high heat surfaces, they werent too hot for touch, everything was fine). back to my point- the temp gauge seems to be at half way through its swing, but just mirrored upside down.

the gas gauge is still a bit iffy, it appears to be locked at one spot, just a little lower than dead left. i need to go out and put a full tank in to see if it gos up to a perfect up-left position. then at that point i would know its got the temp gauges disease.

would resetting the computer (taking the battery cable off for 15 seconds- if thats how you really do it) fix this? im guessing id have to retune if i did this as well, which isnt a problem at all, i have the tuner in hand.

if that isnt how you would reset the gauges and or computer. how do you go about that?

There are a couple TSB's for the fuel fill and erratic fuel gauges on these 05's also.. I have had it with the jumping fuel gauge and filler problems. Going to call and see if I can get the TSB's done even though i am the second owner on my car.

just tried the computer reset by taking the negative battery cable off for 20 minutes, that didnt fix the gauges, although it did put 5 miles of extra gas in my tank according to my digital readout (miles to E).

well where could that be. on both of those sensors for the gauges? or the cluster? or what.

i mean they swing like they normally would, except the temp is upside down, and the gas gauge is sideways...

would this still happen if there was a bad ground?

considering that there are a million wires on your car its hard to tell from here but the easiest thing i think to do is first un plug the fuel sender and see what happens. that will eliminate the sender for fuel next hook up you scan tool and see what the ect is on that or if its throwing a cht sensor code or something. its a start
