Annoying squeaks/rattles and how you fixed them

Spent a good chunk of my saturday chasing down rattles and squeaks that seemingly appeared over the winter. Figured this would be a decent thread as our cars aren't getting any newer or quieter these days.

#1- Chipring/squeaking from the truck area of the car.

This one took forever as I thought it was the upper strut bushings, so I pulled apart most of the trunk area. Turned out it was the trunk latch rubbing on the catch ring.. tried adjusting the height a few times but just ended up wrapping the catch with electrical tape (ghetto but works)

#2 - Loud clunk when letting off the clutch in reverse

Turneds out that the bushing thing in front of the rear diff was pushed up against the housing since I had been using it as a jack point... stupid mistake of mine to not pull it back down. That's probably not a good jack point huh.

I have a similar clunk when I go from a forward gear to reverse, and visa-versa. I think its the U-Joint. I am replacing it soon. We will see!

I had thought the same exact thing. Finally had a nice weekend so I could get under the car and check it out. Spent a while pushing on and shaking anything I could find but it ended up being that bushing thing (wish I knew what it actually was)

Hmm. If you get under there again snap a pic. I might throw my car on the lift just to see what your talking about. Is it the seal for the rear diff cover?

I bet its a cracked or lose wiper cowl.. Go press down in different areas gently and see if you hear it.. Mine does it too..

And dyno mat works good for road noise and exhaust noise but doesnt help at all with all the interior squeeks or rattles.

I have a similar sound. But I also have some exhaust leaks (thx PO) so until I fix those I am not going to loose sleep over it.

One that annoys me the most sounds like rattling keys or something in the trunk anyone else have that one?

The vents on the radio bezel were shaking something nasty when I drove my car. Then again dumped flow masters and poly motor mounts didn't help.

What I ended up doing was pooping the vents out of place and lining the outside pieces of the vents where they contact plastics of the bezel and vent holes with foam, and reinstalled them. Took all of about 15 minutes and now it's quiet.

On a side note if you install sound deadening. Pick up some sticky foam weather strip from Home Depot, and line every piece of interior trim that has contact with another piece. It will keep **** from squeaking and rattling

the center A/C vents make a rattling on my car that is driving me insane. Even pushing on it or holding it down doesnt help. What on the inside of these vents is actually rattling? I need to fix this asap

There is plastic on plastic contact. Atleast that is how mine was. I ended up pulling the entire bezel out, even though I didn't have to. All you need to do is pop the vents by pulling the top of the vent out, and then flip the vent so it's facing up and pull on the bottom. It should pop right out of place.

Then there is the block plate that opens and closes the vent. That bugger slides out the back of the vent. You don't need to pull the bezel to get it out, but I'd recommend it.

Once you have everythign out, line the outsides edges of the on/off block plate with weather stripping foam where it contacts with other pieces of plastic, and do the same for the actual vent itself. I've done this on two cars now, and the noise went away.

Again, I'd recommend you pull the entire bezel out.

Crazy annoying squeak from the left rear interior panel, seemed to go away when the car was loaded with **** on a move but I may have just not been able to hear it with all the stuff in the back seat. Haven't fixed it yet but will this summer. Trim work can be a pain in the ass, hard to get motivated when turning up the stereo is easier. :D

First post...total newb

I'm squeeking like crazy behind the d-side door. Thought it might be bushings but starting to think it is iso's. Seems to be getting worse. y'all agree?

If I replace iso's, do I have to do both sides (drive & pass)?

I bought this car for my wife years ago but I feel in love with it and took it back a couple of years ago. Just getting started with the mods. Want to do the maintenance stuff first to bring it back.

try havin a vert guys lol youll hear EVERY lil squeak a car can make plus the top rattles lol

if you do iso's, do all four corners. if youre tryin to save cash do either the front or back, dont do just one side. i dont see it being iso's unless they are completely shot. i dont even have them up front on my car.

oh and welcome to the forum and have fun around here. when you get a chance, post up some pics in the pic section.

dunno what it is yet but i have a really loud thumping noise from the driveline of my car. if you let off the gas and coast then tap the gas it will make a loud thud. there is play in the drive line and i know its not a universal or the rear end.
other problem i had was the TOB but i actually put spray grease in it and it doesnt complain any more about that.

Thanks for the advice 00vert! This forum gives me a new reason to get on the net...can't believe it took me this long to find it.

I have read other guys that have removed the iso's. I actaully want to lower it a bit--just a little. When standing back and looking at it across the yard, that space between the tires and fenders looks like the grand canyon sometimes. Does that work out OK for verts?

removing the iso's will lower it about a 1/4 inch or so. verts have that K-brace under the car which is pretty low, so depending on how low your car is, watch how you drive and where you drive.

As for the pics...my burgandy has faded to a pastel--I hate to say it--pinkish--in places. Desperatly need a paint job. I'll post if you promise not to laugh. :)
the guys in this section here might be able to help you out. General Car Care & Detailing Forum post up some pics and get some opinions on what to do about it. it might be fixable.

anyone know how to fix the package tray rattle with the rear speakers???

Drivers door speaker rattles and the trim around the center vents rattles. Any idea on how to quiet those down? Thought about finding some cheap stick-on insulation from a hardware store.
