Auto to manual swap information

I've been thinking about swapping in a manual transmission into my car 1999 V6 3.8l Auto with O/D since I got it. Has anyone done it or is planning to do it? Is the swap worth it? What transmission do I need? Also, one from a V6 or a GT? Do I need to get an entire parts car so I don't have to keep searching for small things? Additionally, I have read this article so I have some idea of what's in involved, but any further information would be appreciated.(http://www.moddedmustangs.com/forums/99-04/139013-manual-swap-how.html#post2336876)

Thanks,

I've done the swap, albeit on a 2001. You will need

- T5 from a 94-98 v6 (gt may work as well, not sure on that)
- T5 to 3.8L bellhousing (5.0 bellhousing may also work)
- Flywheel for a 3.8L, believe the older motors are externally balanced
- Pedal assembly for a manual - clutch, brake. The throttle pedal is the same.
- Either a tune from a tuner to set your car up for a manual OR use the computer from a manual car. Using a different computer will require going to a dealer and having your car reflashed due to the antitheft stuff on the cars
- Wiring harness from a 94-98 manual v6
- clutch and pressure plate
- throwout bearing
- pilot bearing
- clutch fork
- clutch cable
- clutch quadrant - may as well get an aftermarket quadrant and firewall adjuster
- shifter assembly - stock or otherwise
- shifter boot/ plastic bezel piece
- different driveshaft OR get an input yoke for a t5 trans and stick it on the end of your driveshaft
- something like 3 quarts of trans fluid... I used Dex/Merc 3 if I remember right
- transmission crossmember - mine was the same

and then you need all the bolts and such -
flywheel bolts
clutch and pressure plate bolts
bellhousing bolts
shifter bolts
crossmember bolts (can reuse these)

I think that is it. I may be forgetting something minor.
Swap should take 2-3 days if you are pretty mechanically inclined and you don't run into any problems.
I had to take my headers off to get the automatic out but I have longtubes so

Wow, thanks a ton! That was totally what I needed. That brought up another question... the differences in years between the New Edges, as I said before, my car is a '99. I don't know enough about these cars to know if there is a difference between '99 and '01, so hopefully someone else can chime in.

I believe that in 2001, the Mustangs were changed a little bit compared to the '99 & '00.

I would assume more, but the interiors for sure. Possibly different engine names and transmissions.

The 99-00 engines were externally balanced, so you will need a flywheel that has the counterweight on it (not a neutral balanced one) You will also have to line this up correctly so the weight is in the correct place. when you take your flexplate off, it should have a weight on it too, so you want to mark how it came off, that way you can appropriatly put the flywheel back on.

As far as that, the 99-04 t5 transmissions would be the same as the 94-98 (at least should be) I know that SlowSix used a 00 transmission (because he bought mine lol)

What he listed is pretty much spot on, and he would be the best to ask for advice because I believe he is the most recent to have performed the swap.

Getting the exhaust out of hte way frees up a ton of space, so I would suggest doing that. The gt's have it easier with a mid pipe where we have a solid exhaust, so you can either cut your exhaust halfway down and make a coupler for it, or take the whole thing off.

I thought your car was a 1996 as stated in the original post. Guess you have a 99.

In that case, you will need a 99-04 transmission.
Mainly because there is a difference in how the speedo sensor attaches which makes a 94-98 trans harder to use.

What toph said is right as far as the balancing.
As far as the transmission harnesses, you can either hack up your auto harness and use it, and you will have to jump the neutral safety switch wires together, or you will need a 99-00 manual harness. The harness changed in 01-04.

Potentially it could work, so long as its just the frame that's bent. I worry that it won't start, but you could maybe talk to him about getting just the transmission stuff. Personally I would get the transmission, shifter stuff, get the pedal assembly, the trans computer, but buy the clutch and flywheel new, no reason to put that kind of work into your car using old wearing parts. For the stuff you would need I would offer maybe $400 for the stuff that you need

Btw I have a spare pedal assembly if you would be interested, just sitting in my garage.

Yeah get a new clutch and flywheel.

Flywheel was like $90 new from Summit Racing. A new clutch is like $100-$300 depending on if you want stock replacement clutch or something beefier

I swapped a manual into my old '02 Mustang, and honestly, it was a lot of work but 100% worth it if you enjoy driving stick. You’ll need a T5 or TR3650—both work, but the GT setup is stronger if you plan to push more power. I ended up grabbing a parts car because tracking down the small stuff like the pedal assembly, clutch cable, and wiring harnesses was a pain otherwise. If you can’t do that, a complete swap kit would save a ton of hassle. Wiring took the most patience, but once it was done, the car felt way more alive, and I never regretted it.
