Bad Day at the Track!

Last weekend I decided to do some test-n-tune runs at the local 1/8th mile track in my Capri to see if I could get some decent times with the new engine, but I was having the same issues as last fall. When I shift gears, it falls flat on it's face for a second, then recovers. I was one of the first cars to run & immediately blew the tires when I dropped the clutch. Second pass hooked OK, but fell on it's face in 2nd & 3rd gear(9.04). Even though my floats are set plenty high, I decided to raise the front & back about a half turn. Bingo! finally a decent run, until I missed 3rd gear!!!! I did still manage a 7.88@87mph. So I must have some kind of fuel delivery problem(new Edelbrock pump, filters, etc.) My pickup in the tank is kind of rusted, so I suspect that's the problem. Anyway, now for the bad part. When I stopped to pick up my time slip, the gal at the timing shack said I was leaking something under my car, so I hurried to my pit & found a big puddle of green stuff under my car, plus I had no PS on the return road. I figured I probably lost a belt & overheated. Nope!! the water pump shaft broke off & put the fan through my aluminum radiator breaking the fan shroud & serp belt in the process. Crappy luck!! I've never seen this before. So, time for a new radiator, electric fan set up, water pump, & serp belt!! (also not very happy to pay $78 for a genuine Motorcraft water pump, only to find it a reboxed made in China part!)

Gona pass on the electric WP. I'd have no way to run my belt for alt., PS, AC. This is a street car. Unless I'd go with the Meziere electric with the built in idler! But for $552.99 I'll pass on that also!

That blows man.

I've actually experienced something similar in my old White '69. What happened to mine was the weep hole on the pump got clogged up, so it never dripped, and then the bearing let go in the water pump, which let the shaft come forward and the fan went through the radiator.
That's the weird part, I can grab the broken shaft on the old WP & turn it freely by hand!

I've got the new setup mounted, just got to do some finish wiring for the fan controller. Looks like I'll have to drill & tap a spot for the fan sending unit. It needs to be in the coolant.

Holy **** catastrophic failure! lol That sucks man, I hate how china makes everything now a days.
At least you went with an electric fan setup!

Its hard to tell after the fact but I'd lean more towards your fan clutch or fan being warped and out of balance. Even a small amount would put a huge stress on the water pump shaft. Having a heavy rigid fixed blade metal fan makes any imbalance problem even worse. In a perfect world, you should replace those any time you replace a water pump.

I feel your pain man so far in the past 8 months I have replaced the rear trak-lok, fried the transmission, then the torque converter, the the oil pump driveshaft snapped a few weeks ago. Thank god I was saving for a new engine. I'm going to the track on Friday and I can't really think of anything else that could go wrong but I won't be suprized lol. Looks good bud don't get ur hopes up it will all work out!

I shift at 6200. Although this happened after my run on the return road(thankfully) I would have hated to spill coolant on the track!

Probably was damaged on your missed gear if I was to guess. What kind of radiator is that, a misheeemojo?

Yea, some cheapo ebay radiator, but it worked very well, never got above 1/4 the way up the gauge, even in traffic.

The new rad is a 3 row Champion bought off of ebay. It was $208 to the door & looks like pretty decent quality. Running a 180 t-stat. Never had a cooling issue before at all.

I wanted a Ford Racing aluminum radiator(have used several in the past), but it has been discontinued!! I think I bought the last 2 from American Muscle about a year ago.
