camshaft positioning sensor

The service engine soon light is on with p1309 camshaft positioning sensor. I haven't replaced it, but I am pretty sure why it is throwing the code. When I installed my cam, I had assumed I did everything correctly, however, going back over it now, I remember, that I totally forgot to TDC. The car ran perfectly for 2 months after the cam install, and just the other day it wouldn't start correctly, it is missing, back-firing and there's absolutely no power when try to go. I am buying the tool that is reccomended in the haynes manual. However, thier description is horrible. They throw me in 4 different sections and tell me to do stuff that isn't logical at some points. Anyone know how to tdc and reposition the sensor without ripping the engine apart? I'd wait the couple of weeks till I get my powerpack and such, but the car is a need for me to get places.

... you have like two options take it in and let them reset it ... or take your valve cover off on the passanger side and rotate the crank using the pulley bolt thats in the center of the crank pulley... and watch the rockers and wait till it goes to tdc... some one will be able to explain how you know if its at tdc ... but by watching it you will know... then reset the cmp with the tool... and then reset your computer and give it a go

You need to be on TDC with the valves on #1 cylinder closed. You set the crankshaft at TDC from marks on the damper and a timing pointer. With the crankshaft in this position the valves on #1 should be closed, if they are open you need to turn the crank another turn and line it up with TDC again.

oh yea thats right...

you need to get it so both of the valves are closed on the number one cylinder... the only bad part is the way stephen says to do it you need to take your timing cover off... now if you are very observant you might be able to take the valve off and start turning the engine will you find something that looks correct ... but i hate to tell you to just start turning your engine over

thanks for the help. i got it under control. i pulled the spark plug out and someone turned the key bit by bit till i felt the piston up. then we rotated the crankshaft flywheel until it lined up on tdc. now all i need is that stupid tool for 54 degrees and no one has it.
