hey everyone im tryin to find the original owner of my mustang so i can find out what if anything tune wise he did to the car ive been told that a carfax report will give me his info if any of yall could help me out here id apriciate it

Yeah you just go to carfax, pay to run a report.

Considering the company I work for sells the data that carfax uses and most of that is quite watered down you will be hard pressed to actually find the owner.

But its always nice knowing where your car has been and what kind of maintenance was performed. Depending on where they took it you will see all kinds of good stuff like dealer maintenance, shop oil changes, warranty fixes etc.

Its never 100% complete though and you must remember its only going to contain information that someone provided in some fashion. Hickville shops will not usually keep that information so there might be gaps.

there are people here that can run it for you.
You guys crack me up. I'd suggest keeping that to PM.

I thought we were only worried about screwing scum like the music/movie industry. If you like something like carfax and want to see it stick around why not pay them? They arent trying to sue their users, change laws, or screw customers. Let them make an honest buck.

Just my opinion.

ok well i paid for a carfax report and sureenough it didnt tell me any more than the dealership did lol oh well back to the drawing board

The dealerships keep carfax rolling in the dough.
So leave the guy alone. He's just trying to get the
info the dealership should be giving him in the first place
Carfax pays a hell of a lot more than you would expect for that data.

I agree the dealership should cover that but its not carfax in the wrong. The company I work for collects this data from all 50 states and other sources. We normalize it, update things that change, follow address changes, tag things by how trustworthy the source is, have huge mainframes process this data and score certain leads, checking for fraud and other signs of mischief. We have a whole floor for just this type of work. Its a huge drawn out process to get that fancy data which carfax pays DEARLY for. They pay PER lookup for some kinds of information. Those blanket monthly access accounts sometimes cost them more than they make if you run a zillion lookups. It is so complicated how these systems work I couldnt possibly describe the personnel and infrastructure required to support an operation like that. Simply keeping accurate information is a data management nightmare especially since bad information leads to lawsuits when people cant sell their vehical.

I'm not a huge fan of corporate america either but these people are not the bastards trying to legislate changes to save their empire *cough riaa, mpaa*. At least carfax provides an awesome service that genuinely helps out most of us.

Do what you will, yes its easy to cheat these people. I'm not normally the guy to call someone out but these people are not out to get us. Give em a brake.

I'm not saying I'm at all perfect, but I understand how this industry works and I think they are doing nothing that would promote us to screw them.

I'm not trying to pick on him, I'm just saying its not right. Do what you want.

Just to name a few things. A carfax report tells you everyone who has owned the car including theyre names. It tells you if they reported any damage to said car. It tells you how many miles that were on it when they got it & when they sold it.

Except for when data is lost before they get it.

Buddy of mine had a Saturn that was wrecked 3 times and carfax showed the previous owner as the current owner, with a clean car. They had zero record of any wreck or change of ownership.

Dont rely 100% on their data. The error rate is pretty damn good though but they still miss things. I would use that info as a tool and not as your answer. Still check out everything, perhaps call the service centers and do some social engineering.

For instance "Hi this is bob, my daughter was paid to have the car serviced at your facility and I think she kept the money. If I give you the vin can you show me any information currently on record at your facility?" "And just to double check can you verify the spelling of names?"

Stuff like that.... might aid you if they dont have the dudes name.

Good luck
