Daily Driven and Road Course Tires, What do you run?

Hello, I am trying to get ideas on what would be a good Daily/Track Day tire that I could swap to after my Nitto 555s are worn out. The car tends to be my mostly weekend/evening car while the civic takes the commute but I still drive it a decent amount. As for track days haven't really gone to very many but I am trying to go more often when work permits it. As of right now my goal is to get maybe 6 track days in this coming year. I live in CA desert and the local track is Willow Springs so my driving conditions are usually dry mostly all year long. Temps are usually 70s-mid 80s in spring, 90-110 in summer, and winter is a crapshoot (one day it's 80 next it's 30)

I ran the Falken rt615k's previously, very good tires. Right now, I'm running the Bridgstone Pole Position s-04's. I'm happy with both of them. My car is primarily a street car but will see several events this coming year.

You mentioned having commuter car -- so if you can avoid driving in the rain then I recommend NT01s -- I would _not_ run them over 50 MPH in a mild rain (any faster or in a heavy rain they are trouble). I run NT01s on the street (front and back) -- I used to run NT05s in the front and NT05Rs in the rear (I also have Invo's and friends with 555s). Compared to a 555, the NT01 will wear much faster, but if you want more grip there is no way you can get around that.

I have had good experiences with the Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires for street and track duty. Back when I was a poor college student I tracked a set of Sumitomo HTR Z III tires, they got hot fast, then greasy and would lose grip, then would chunk like all hell. Right now I have a set of Michelin PS2 on the rear and Bridgstone RE-01R or something like that on the front. I have not tracked the Bridgestones yet. Heard good things about the Federal 595RSR tires too but never used them.

Dont think you can do any better than Toyo R888.

I've heard good things about S-04's and the Pilot Super Sports from others but sadly it doesn't look like either of those companies manufacture those models in my size (275/40/17,315/35/17). Right now I am running staggered but I am leaning towards picking up another rear set of 17x9 so that my options are a little bit better. As for the Toyo R888's and the NT01's, what is the tread life on those? I would like performance but would like them to last for a decent amount of mileage. I know track/spirited driving will completely throw those estimates out the windows but I still would like to know if either of you know. Also as for a more street oriented tire, do any of you guys have experience with BFGoodrich G-Force Sport Comp-2 tires? I swear I remember people on this forum saying they're a good tire and they seems to be relatively affordable.

Ive ran two sets of the BFG gforce sports on the front of my GT. I also put them on the front of my Mach replacing the crappy Nitto 555s that were on there. Really like them. Rear of the GT always had KDW II but now when its time to replace i willl put the gforce sports on the rear. My GT is back to stock and a daily driver so no point of putting a more expensive tire if the power isnt there. For street duty the gforce sports do well.

I'm running Continental Extremecontact DWS on all four corners. 50,000 mile tread life. This is the third set I've run and on two different Mustangs. There's also another DWS version for more strict track use or autocross. It's like 30,000 mile rated I think but since I wanted the best of both worlds of performance and long mileage, these all seasons Extremecontacts hook up great.

I track a set of Nitto NT05s. My last adventure out to Barber Motorsports park saw a good amount of dry track time but it got wet on the second day and they still did really well. I was slowed down an average of 5 to 10 miles an hour depending on the corner. Was able to drive the car hard enough that I gave some Porsche cars trouble in my V6 anyway. They do pretty well on the street too and I would daily them if I didn't have a second set of wheels and tires I daily on.

Also Nitto is supposed to be coming out with the NT555 G2. Supposed to be a better tire than the NT555. I am betting they will be really good in the rain but will lack a little in dry traction compared to a NT05, DWS, PS2, or R888.

Ya, I like the 555's but its like driving on rocks. They really have very little bite from a standing start and just spin and spin a spin. As for road course those I have really nothing to compare them to since they're the only tires and the only car I have ever tracked.

I don't think he would be disappointed with the NT05 though. They have good tread life too. I am just wondering how long you want them to last under everyday driving. I know you could get 6 days (not weekends) on a set of the NT05 tires but how much daily driving do you do.

RE71Rs are the new jesus tire from what I hear, pricey but they might be worth it. No idea on life.

Hankook RS-3s seemed to have good bite on my buddy's fiesta ST but they were too big and were cutting down on the fender wells if you hit a rumble strip, he moved to the direzza ZII and really likes them.

They're worth the money if you're going to use them, I've ran a few test cars on the RE71R's and they did very well. Just like the Falken's, BFG's, or Bridgestone S-04's, they're badass, but pricey.

I just got my Bridgestone Potenza RE-71Rs 275/35/18s put on today. VERY capable tire so far on the street. The next autocross is in Jan, ill give a review on them then. After my drive in them I had a ton of road crud stuck to the tires... they are very sticky.

I have the bfgs on the rear of my cobra in 275. No complaints but I'm nice too them and still have a 3.27 gear so breaking them loose with those and I haven't had my car in 7 months so lol

Took my car out today for a spin in the hill country. These tires are nothing short of excellent. I ran a section of road about 5x up and down, had the brakes pretty tired but these tires just kept on gripping. I have 4.30s in my rear end, and I ahd a hard time getting the back end to kick out on corner exits, even at tight hairpins I could nail it and the tires held great. Understeer has gone way down from the previous GFG sportcomp 2's, but I also went from a 245 with an 8" wide front wheel to a 275 and a 9.5" wide front wheel.

I bought some Go-Pros to play around with. Still trying to figure out the best ways to get rid of wind noise. The link takes you to a 1.5 min or so clip of a really fun section. All in all, I am VERY pleased with the tires. Like I mentioned before, the first autocross for the year is in Jan, thats where these tires should really shine because they heat up quickly.
