If you want a little more juice for the same price, the next alternator get 1999-2002 town car alternator, matches up fine and it has slightly higher amps
I went through about 5 alternators after I installed my blower. I think the heat from it being so close to the alternator and the higher RPMS burned the diodes. I got an alternator from PA performance with a bigger pulley and never had a problem since.
Which alternator did you go with from them because i looked at their alternators and in their ad it said it wouldnt fit in a supercharged or modded engine bay?
I don't have a Vortech but I've had absolutely no problems with my alternator. I did change alternators after my intake manifold broke but that way only because I the original had over 160,000 miles (over 80,000 supercharged), an underdrive pulley, was drenched in antifreeze and was dirty looking.
I have one of these in my garage and have yet to install it, but this is the most competitively priced high output alternator I've seen. I figured I'd post up for those interested. I was skeptical so I had the local motor-
/generator rebuild shop verify for me that it's 220amp as claimed.
So not to hijack this thread, but I just ordered a 15% overdrive pulley. Am I going to have issue now with my alternator? Can I just put on a bigger alternator pulley? Anyone know the size of the stock one? Thanks!
I've heard that the max speed for our alternators is 15k from one source and 16k from another source. I recommend you research the max shaft speed and then take the alternator pulley size and the crank pulley size and calculate out how fast you'd be spinning the alternator at your desired redline. If someone else doesn't post it first, I'll measure the stock alt pulley this weekend with my digital micrometer.
Well I would be using a 15% OD pulley and I will be revving out to 7K rpms. According to the calculator, I am pretty sure I will be overspinning the crap out of the alternator. The problem is, I am not sure what the stock alternator pulley size is. Using an alternator pulley of 2.5 inches, my alternator would be spinning at 21K at 7K rpms. If I could find an alternator pulley of 3.33" then the alternator would be spinning at 15.8K at 7K rpms.
Contact PA performance and tell them what the issue is. They sold me my pulley but for your mods I think the pulley would be huge and might not give enough power at idle.
Faleen try metco. I know they make larger underdrive pulleys for terminators up to about 4 inches. I don't know if they work on our alternators, but it's probably worth inquiring. Both are 6G family alternators. My assumption is all things are the same between the two except for the external case and the number of ribs on the affixed pulley.
