i call bs as well on the ford dealer. nonetheless if thats true they dont have the tool(a midtronics micro XL or micro410) they must be a shady poor run shop. go to a GM dealer even. i work at a gm dealer and we have the tools bc we are required to. but seriously, save some money, get a cheap DVOM/DMM form sears


disconnect the positive form alternator and positive form battery. ohm test it. no more than 0.5 ohms, preffered is 0.1ohms.

then reconnect both leads.

car off. key not in ignition. test/measure voltage from positvie on battery to negative on battery. then measure from positive at alternator to negative at battery. then do same tests but use a good ground other than the battery. repeat the same with engine at 2k rpms while testing. alternator specs of max output are usually done at aprox. 1.8k to 2.2k rpms.
