Anyone have any tips/hints etc on iPod installation?

I'd LOVE to be able to hook it straight up to the main amps. Not any FM radio solutions that Radio-Shack and Wal-Mart love to sell for premium prices.

I have the stock 6cd changer system. How hard would it be to hook something up that lets you connect the iPod to the system? I have a lot of experience in soldering/circuit board work/wire stripping/etc I used to etch and build my own boards. I am good at reading schematics and building things, bad at designing my own circuits.

they do make one that will interface with the stock system as Troy said, i just cant remember the exact model # that is specific to peripheral but other companies make them as well...

Rob if you want something done Ive got some parts laying around that will work for you with the flick of a switch. It will be just like that interface except less money, actually you can have the stuff if you want as its just sitting here collecting dust. If your interested just hit me up on PM and ill throw my # your way or you can just grab it from JP.

i actually dont have one done to my vehicle as ive got screens in all my cars.
the process that im talking about though uses an FM modulator that has a 3.5" mini headphone jack with female RCA's attached to it. Now dont be mistaken if youve heard about how FM transmitters work (like ****) FM modulators connect to your car antenna and gets its own power. it take as station that you set it to and cancels it out, even if there is a station on it. It is pretty much a crystal clear signal, never had problems when i used to install them. Installation consists of getting power and ground, connectin modulator to radio and antenna, running switch and audio jack to desired location and thats it.

only disadvantage to this way is that it wont charge the device and you will have to control the device from your hands. the other one will charge your device and allow you to control it through your radio.

just wanted to let you know all that was involved.

Don't wanna do the FM radio thing. It makes already bleh sounding mp3s sound like they are being played through the radio. I usually rip all mine at 256. Most of the ones I download I get via bit torrent in flac format. That why I can also have a CD quality copy. I am looking into hard-wiring a input for it. Unless the 6changer dies, I will have no reason to get a new head unit. It works fine for what I use it for. And I have no real need for subs. It makes the car heavier, and I don't listen to BASS HEAVY music. I like the EQ settings to be set correctly with no frequencies being any overbearing on another. Being that I listen to all kinds of music, the current system works just fine.

Well honestly your best bet then is to rip out the 460 HU and put a nice double din Pioneer in there and get the iPod hook up. Because I will promise you this...sooner or later that 460 unit will eat on of your favorite CD's and you'll be cursing the thing out like some bastard ran over your foot. :crazy

All my CDs I put in it are copies. I never bring my originals in the car. Too many "lost" CDs that people "borrow" without asking me. This way If someone is in my car and hears something they like and wants to "borrow" it. I just give them the copied CD, and make another. It's one of the main reasons I was so glad to see CD burners get so cheap. I had one too many bootleg CDs that cost a lot of $$ at the time never get returned to me.

Once I get my iPod setup, I wont be using the CD player part of it anyhow. iPod for my music, and the radio for everything else.

I have no need for an overpriced BLING BLING cd player.

I didn't mean eat your CD's as in killing the CD; I mean like it'll eat the CD and kill the head unit all together. Won't be able to get the CD's out, radio will act up. It's just a pain in the ass. I had a new head unit in my car about 2 weeks after I bought it.

That I will replace my CD player if it breaks? Sure :)

BTW I am pretty decent with a soldering iron ;)

I fixed my dad's Audi's CD player twice by replacing burnt up electrical parts inside.

Look at this thread. This is what you need. I have it and it works just fine with the 6 disc changer. Sounds great and charges the ipod. You can't control the ipod through the stereo but you can't have everything with this. I have had it for a few months now and it hasn't given me any problems, plus i paid almost nothing for it.
