Is a V6 worth Tuning?

I currently have a 2006 V6 Mustang (Manual). My question to you guys is, is it worth tuning up and throwing a bunch of upgrades into it? Or would I be better off selling it and getting a GT and start from there? Your first question is probably "well what do I want to do?" What it boils down to, is a couple of my friends sport Honda S2000s and like to talk down to me. I would like to mod my car to beat theirs. One of their S2000s is Supercharged. What would it take for me to beat them? Going drag style is one aspect but I hear they like to race on the track. Can a mustang even beat a S2000 on the track? Whats my budget? I dont really have one but im not rich. I cant go out and buy a new Mustang thats just not possible. But trading in my V6 for a GT is something I could swing by the wife or buying an upgrade here and there is easy to swing too. Eventually I would like to Supercharge the mustang as that is the only way I could see it possible to beat a S2000 that is supercharged as well.

Any help would be awesome. Here is a summary of my questions:

Am I dreaming too big?
Is the V6 worth upgrading or is it a waste of time/Money?
Should I trade my V6 for a GT?
Is beating my friends S2000s and shutting them up possible? on the strip and track?

Thanks in advance!

And there you go.

Stock they run ~5.5 sec 0-60 with ~14 1/4mile.

With just the HCI, you'd still be a bit slower. With the nitrous you'd be about the same. With the blower you'd be faster. Any combination you could :lol at them. (But you'll probably need a combo with the SC'd s2000)

Make sure you have good wheels and tires.

And improve the suspension. Lowering springs, shocks, control arms, panhard.

And don't forget the gears and differential. http://www.americanmuscle.com/mustang-lsd-0510.html and http://www.americanmuscle.com/05-07-mustang-gears.html

Make sure you can drive.

So your homework for now is research. Use the search function on this forum and browse these tech threads.

Is it worth it? or would I be better off trading the V6 for a GT. It would slow down the Tuning process but I would be better in the long run right? I just hate going to work and getting crap because I drive a V6 and get told everyday how I should have bought a GT. -.-

Well for your first question it's not something we can answer, you have to make up your mind and see if it's worth it for you. HA and I sometimes get crap for driving a v6 at school but I just laugh it off because there stuck in a old camry or civic.

A guy with an awesome '84 Vette gave me a compliment on how my car sounds. Made me happy.

There are MANY threads where people consider buying a gt and selling the 6. Yeah if you didn't have a mustang then of course it would be better to get the gt or cobra right from the start, but the thing is; you have the 6 now. Sell the 6er and buy a gt you'll be better off. But if you put a blower on the 6 right now, you'll be better off than if you just got a gt and left it stock.

When people say 'tuning', they are usually referring to dyno tuning or using a handheld tuner to improve the car's computer system. Adding modifications such as the ones I gave links to and described is usually called 'modding'.

The only thing I dont like about 6ers are the sound, other than that you can really make a 4.0 fast just a 600 dollar nitrous kit alone will let you keep up with Gt's, and if you go F/I you can play around with more than just GT's. In my opinion yea its worth it just leave it single exhaust so with people are looking at your tail lights they know your a v6 ;)

Ok so how about the question on the pair of S2000s? Can a Mustang beat an S2000 both in a drag setting and on the track? Would trying to trade the mustang in for a 350z or something suit me better?

On a side note, is nitro like how you see it on the movies? you press a button and just a short burst of speed or is it something like a constant flow when you activate it? Is it expensive to fill up?

They are just cars. Any car can be made fast in any situation or combination of situations.

Just because old Mustangs had leaf springs and as much clearance as my Jeep, doesn't mean that they can't handle now.

I feel like your question as to whether or not you could beat an S2000 has been answered. Are you willing to "pay to play"?

Do some research on the different types of nitrous setups available, and how they work.
Start here:
HowStuffWorks "How does nitrous oxide help an engine perform better?"

Then here:
All About Nitrous Oxide - ThirdGen.org

And here:
Everything you wanted to know about nitrous

And then maybe search some of the more specific things if you have questions, like window switch, blow off valve, bottle heater. If you actually read these three pages, you'll learn a whole lot, and you will be able to make a more informed decision about what to do.

I know someone with a s2k and their wow.. the power to weight with thoes cars is what makes them so fast. I dont think just a 75 shot could do the job, because I read that when you go to a 100 shot you need a tune and probably nitrous capable cams. I could be wrong tho. so that's probably not 10 grand to get a good nitrous setup, still a couple tho. I dont even think 2005-09 GT's can beat s2ks, I could be wrong tho.

If they are "friends" they wouldn't be talking down to you. If your car didn't look better than theirs they wouldn't care, take it as a complement.
There will always be a faster car .... who cares, live with it, enjoy your Mustang.

+1 :withhomo
Also I just looked it up and s2ks 1/4 mile times arnt really impressive 14.3 with light mods and one guy on a fourm got 15.3. So forget my inital stupidity, in a drag race with a tune cai and a 75 shot with good sticky tires you could probably get em not 100 % sure but you'd put up a fight. But on the track your in his house and probably no you wont be so lucky, mustangs are built for straight lines and sk2s are build for the turns.

GrayPony couldn't have said it better.

"There will always be a faster car."

IMHO dumping a ton of money into your 6 isn't the way to go. You can make it fast, very fast. But it will always still be a 6er to most people. As for the SC S2000's you prolly won't be able to beat them on both street/track and have a reliable daily car. As mentioned, their power/weight ratio is crazy.

If I had 10k to drop on my V6 it'd be to drop in a FRPP modular 5.0 and find a decent trans. But honestly I feel that you're best bet if you solely want performance then you need to look at getting a GT, heck I've seen used 05 GTs for $10k with decent mileage.

thanks for the help! Yeah I think trading in the V6 is the best option. Either for a GT or maybe even a 350z. And to the friends thing. Its not really putting me down its just always taking ****. Not realy serious or anything. Actually one of the guys sold his supercharged 01 GT for an S2000. I dont know why he did it but he did. I personally dont like S2000s but I would love to get a mustang to out perform him so I can show what a big mistake it was to leave his Mustang for a S2000.

Depending on the type of driver he is you could beat him in a 6er most **** talkers cant drive, from my personal experince. Like I said one guy ran in the 15s with a s2k so you might have a chance if hes a horrible driver.

I had 2 friends with s197 v6's. They were pretty quick. They could take out gt's if they were to cocky.

One was a 06 v6 5 speed with nitrous outlet nozzle kit. With 8.8 and 3.73's only he ran a 14.1. Off nitrous he dynoed 220. He put super six ported heads and dynoed 250. On a 100 shot he dynoed 350 and on a 125 made 380. So this thing could surprise some people. He never ran nitrous on the track but i am pretty sure it could have done a 12.

Another friend of mine had a 07 v6 auto, nitrous outlet nozzle with 100 shot and pypes true dual but everything else was bone stock even 7.5 rear end with open diff. At the track he click off a 1.8 60ft and 13 something spraying out the hole! Everyone was like what the heck!

so yeah the v6 can be made to perform quiet well.

Your best bet is just to buy a GT...a HUGE upgrade on power...I mean if anything, tuning your v6 is the best upgrade you can do for it for your money, but I would still say get a GT. Even if you supercharged your v6, which would cost probably the same or more than trading in for a GT, it would have many cons to go along with it, and still around the same power of a GT.

If you're that concerned with your speed just trade it in for an earlier model gt. But considering a 350z? That's pitiful. Clearly you aren't a mustang fan if you would switch from domestic to foreign just to try to beat your friend.... That's pathetic man.

seeing that you have a 8.8 with 3.73's. Throw some sticky tires and launch the piss out of your car and you will be surprised at what that v6 can do.

My friends almost went 13's with 373's in 8.8 on tire.

Buy a GT!!!!

I have a 2006 v6. The money I spent trying to go fast would have been better spent on modding a GT. Here's my list of performance mods: 8.8 rear end w/3.73 gears (that comes standard on a GT), aluminum drive shaft, shorty headers, cold air intake, and a 100 shot with the tune to go with that. I run drag radials at the strip. Without the nitrous I run 15.1at 90mph. With the nitrous I run 13.7@101mph. I'm going to be playing with the tire pressure when I get a chance to get back to the track. Also I'm looking into another tuning session to see if I can get more out of it with out blowing up the motor. I haven't even talked about the exterior mods and interior mods. So all told my money would have better spent on a GT, but never has it entered into my mind to ever get rid of my Mustang for another make to go faster or impress idiots. The only thought in my head is how can I afford to put the new 5.0 into my car right now? I got way too many bills and child support to worry about before that. So right now I'll just enjoy what I've created and suprise a few fools at the track and at a red light. Please people don't get on me about steet racing because I only run when its safe and not stupidly.
