ok i had the alternator check at autozone and its good they say, but when i got back home with it and a voltage tester it reads that its only putting out 11.7 volts. what would cause that to happen?

how did you do the test, continuity or another way. you may have a break in the line somewhere from your alternator to your battery or something isnt making a solid connection.

ok i have checked it all around the wire from the alternator. i decided to check the wire that goes to the alternator to the selniod(black with orange strip) at both spots while i had it off the selniod and both spots (at the end of the wire and the begaining of the wire from the alternator did not put out a reading. while it was hooked up to the selniod it read the same as the battry did which was 11.7 so i know the wire is good. what could it be beside the new alternator? autozone says its good. hmmm its to late to take it back again. please help. did i maybe have a wire ran some where wrong? i had to swap the dash and main hardness durning the engine swap. and where and what is the diode?

Now could it be (if he has them) UDP's? Cause i know mine dont charge right with the UDP's and im switching it back to stock size.

buy a smaller alt pulley commonly called a "over drive pulley"
I had to put a 1.82" pulley on my 3g to get back to correct idle charging which should be 13.2 plus, anything less and your battery is doing the work and will eventually die on you.

its a new aternator and i went and had it checked tonight at autozaone. they say its good but even after i re-hooked up the evg on the thottle body it still is not putting out a charge. this bs is killing me. i have worked so hard on the whole swap. the old alternator was killed by an elec. fan i put on the car. so of course i have taken it back off. they checked that alternator and it was bad thats why i have the new 1 now. it has to be a wire some where not letting the alternator give off a charge. i know its grounded right and my battery is good. i know this cuz of all the test i did with the voltage tester. what could it be?

Did you have the battery tested? if the battery has bad cells it won't take a full charge no matter how much your alt is putting to it.

Have you removed some grounds and recleaned/scratched them up? Not enough grounds or bad grounds will cause allot of resistance/voltage drop.

This isn't going to cure your issue but it's worth mentioning and maybe something you would want to do after you sort your issue out but I picked up .6 volts at idle by adding a 8gauge ground from the alt case to the swaybar mount fyi

I thought it should be over 12 a bit and like 14 while driving? and +1 :dunno

Mine tends to run a little low also at idle, the gauge is pretty close to the red but as soon as i give it any gas it jumps up. I have been contemplating whether or not to get a new one myself. First things to check is if you have a good battery or not because if a cell is dead or dieing it can cause the alternator to be unable to boost the battery high enough. Next check for good connections at the battery itself, and make sure the alternator to battery wire isn't drawing extra power. I had a problem on a few cars at work where the thick wire from the battery to the alternator had over 1.5 to 2V drop in it because it was corroding inside. Hope that helps a little!

this can be a possibility as well.

ok i change the big wire on the battert to the selniod today. that was my first guess. i have a question would my alternator stop putting out a charge all together if i unhook my evg from the throttle body? i did so today as i was putting the new alternator on. i put a block plate on and just left the plus un done so i could get ride of all that emmision stuff. i decided to pull the wire that goes to the battery from the alternator and check it with my voltage meter while the car was running and its not putting out any volts. but reads what the battery does while running when its hooked up to the selniod. which is 11.7 are lower. please help if you can. im so ready to drive this car. been working on it for 3 months straight with the swap i did.

check battery voltage at 2000rpm. should be 14.2 or so

at idle if you check the battery it should read anywhere between 13.4-14.4 volts. if you are not recieving at least a 13 on your battery at idle then there is a problem with your connections from the alternator to the battery or alternator is gone. if you are in the 12 range at idle then you are running strictly off of the battery.

the alternator is not putting any volts out ! i have pulled the wire that comes from the alternator off the selniod and check it with my voltage meter and it was not putting out a charge at all. i know the wire is good cuz it was reading on both ends the same as the battery when i have the wire connected to the selniod. is there a wire that could be ran wrong that would stop the atlernator all toget from putting out any volts?

all my under drive pullys worked fine with this motor setup b4 i swaped it to the other car. if im right the old alternator was working fine on this car after the swap and then i added the elce.fan and burnt up my old alternator so i got this new 1 now. and now am using the clutch fan again. oh yea and disconnected all the wires i ran for the elec.fan.

Well if your 100% sure that your wiring is good then take the alt back and get yet another and before you leave have them test that one as well because it might be the regulator is defective.

Then run through all your wiring again to ensure everything's right. Use this as a reference.

ok i had the alternator check on at a place that shows the voltage that it is putting out. it was at 14 volts or so. i came home and decided to pull off the alternator braket and grind away the spots that touch the block to make sure i have a grat ground. put it al back together and still same problem its not putting out any volts. everything else works on the car like starting. i drove it to work today (2miles away). i know it was running just off the battery but i need to use this car for work. i am wondering if there is a wire on the alternator plug that is hooked up wrong & not letting it kick on. can there be? i checked the plug(black with orange strip) itself and its good. i looked at a good diagram by tmoss and seems like there isn't a wire that could cause it not to put out a charge. please help if you can.
