Hey! I'm new to cars and looking to buy my first as a fixer up on budget. Anything I should be doing?

Is rustoluem decent look for a fixer upper?
What mods (don't need a ho machine but not stock)

Anything you know that i should know would help! Thanks

It takes cash to go fast. I have learned that over the years.

I haven't even gotten my car (2 months away) and the upgrades I'm looking at keep adding up

These cars are never ending projects. Be prepared to drop some cash. H.p =cash how much do u want? I always have a project going I love them. What car/project do u have in mind?
Being this will be my first car I don't need a 500 hp turbo beast. I'm looking at ~250hp with a 2001 v6 (around 1.5 grand with 130-180k miles)I'm on a 3-5 grand budget for everything (will grow over years)

I'll be that guy and say it, buy a v8 and you'll have your 250hp right there. I had a v6 and decided to mod it, then I realized I was wasting my time and stepped up to a v8 and the cost wasn't too much more after selling the 6.

I haven't bought the car yet but the v8 is another grand to have (which may be worth), I may if I find a good deal. I'm not looking to make a power house as its my first car. Though the new edge is reliable and I will want to get more power as I get more comfortable driving, Which in that case I may want a v8. Defiantly something I will have to consider. Getting 250 hp I could put a 100 shot of nitro in and be at 350hp. Just want to smoke all my rich friends that get the 2008 v6 mustang or whatever 20k car they get, and say they will smoke you at there stock 210 hp or the v8s 300 hp. (yes I will take any races off streets)

Thanks for the
input. Ill let you know if I get a v8.

I see higher mileage v8s go for 3-3500 in my area, dont get a v6

Same here but I only have 5 grand for the car. So that would leave 1750 for upgrades
1750-450(paint job)= 1300
1300-150(interior and tint)= 1150
1150- 800 (Suspensions, Brakes, Engine Rebuild kit)= 150
150-500(tires)- -400

That's just getting it to running well w/o performance upgrades..
v6s run for a grand less or more...

This is probably not what you want to hear, but I'm also on the "get a V8" bandwagon. You're gonna be spending the same or more for less reward by going V6.

Aftermarket support for V8>V6.

That being said, I loved my previous V6s (Had a '95 and a 2003). Love my '99 GT way more though.

But end of the day, it's your money to spend/waste. Waste it on a better platform.. Cheers!

I fully understand you guys. Insurance and cost is only thing setting me back with being my first car just unsure

Maby things have changed but you have 5 grand and are trying to buy a junker? so you can spend money to fix it and buy mods.

Buy the good working GT now and maintain it and buy the mods later. I bet some of your upgrade ideas will change after you drive it for a while

I'm not looking to get a complete junker. I'm looking for something that isn't in its best shape for a project with my dad. Being a first car I want to learn the most I can out of it.

Insurance cost is issue for the v8

I'll have to see if I can find a good deal on one, and check quote from insurance (without collision)
Not trying to sound smart but when i was 18 and had v8 cars the insurance difference between the v6 and v8 was me mowing my neighbors lawn once a month for $35. You should try and find a decent v8 for around 4grand. You can still do all the same things with your dad except it will be on a v8 car instead of a v6 and i paint and do body work everyday your not missing anything fun lol. Mods for these cars arent much either.
Handheld tuner $400
mid pipe and axle back $600
cold air intake $200
throttle body $150
and you pretty much have a full bolt in New Edge Gt making around 260hp

As far as suspension i was in your same shoes, senior in highschool with a part time job. Stocks springs are actually great just cut the front and back to lower your car and it helps the performance as well while saving you money and giving you and your pops a fun little project

Super helpful, I'll have to get instance quotes but the v8 keeps sounding better (literally v6 exhausts are awful)
