Shaved side scoops

Has anyone ever had their side scoops removed and filled in? I am tired of looking at the scoops since EVERYONE has them. I want something different. I love the side scoop delete look of the 05 and up mustangs.

How hard is it to remove the scoops?
Are they bolted to the car or are the 3M'd?

A reputable body shop in my area will be doing the shaving, but they charge by the hour so I would like to cut down my costs as much as possible. If I can take the scoops off myself, I would save them the trouble of doing it, as well as $50 bucks or so. I know that there are BULLITT scoops available, but I would have to pay for the scoop, then to get it painted. So I figure why bother with that, when I can shave the scoops off and just get that area repainted?

If you have any prior experiences with this let me know!

says you have a gt, so im assuming you have these ones:

in which case theres just 6 clips that push into the quarter panel. you can pop them all off or you can take the back 3 off and just push the front towards the front of the car and slide it out of the clips. i was going to shave mine, but i decided to get the bullitt ones just because my door wouldnt line up if i just left them off and put a shaved panel in there, im pretty sure the area where the scoop is, is recessed to match the door. anyway, i dont have any experience with the shaving, but thats how you take them off. i went the bullitt route and im loving it so far.

although it does look damn good shaved...

Im not sure what the hole looks like under the scoops but the quarter panel is metal so its not too hard to shave it. if its all flat they can just cut out a piece a metal, weld it to the hole, grind it, bondo it, sand it, and paint it. might take 2-3 hours to do work on each panel

energie- yes those are the scoops I have. Thanks for explaining how they work. When you say the door wouldn't line up, what do you mean by that? The door works fine stock, the scoops don't hinder its operation. Removing the scoops really shouldn't do anything imo.

98stang- thanks for your input!

as far as i knew the part where the door is indented for the scoop, it was made to line up with the scoop, so if you just took the scoop off and filled it, the door would stick out since the side scoops are..what a 1/8 1/4 of an inch, mine with the scoop as it is now is flush with the door, so just as long as they fill it in enough to line up with the door and not just put a thin layer on it, it'll be fine. hope that made sense.

Thanks for those pictures! That BULLITT is an awesome car! And I just went out and looked at my door and I see what you mean by "sticking out". This is going to be a tougher project than I thought... I think lol

I love the shaved scoops as well. I have seriously considered doing that to my car. It looks so sleek.

I love them too, but I still like the 03/04 scoops.

Well crap, now there is something else i want to do to my car now. At least this one will be easy

When you pull the scoop off there are all the little holes that the clips go into and there are also some big openings under there also. And it is "recessed" to make the scoop line up with the door.

Anyone know the aprox cost for a shop to do this? I'm assuming it's alot because the paint would have to be blended, wouldn't it?

#14 ·
Yeah it has to be blended and matched. I would say $300-$400 on the high end...

if you can fid a shop to do it for 3-400 run the other way... This is what I do for a living and doing it on the side I would want 3-400 just for the metal/filler work and putting it in primer... it seems like it would only take a couple of hours but it takes a while to get it right... and get it streight... just my .02 oh, and definatly have bolth doors blended... if you were to take it to a shop look at around 1000 to have it done...

300-400 on the low end for a shop.

shaving both scoops, and blending the base and clearing the entire quarter panels.

Also another thing you would want to be mindful of is that since it butts right up to the door, it is highly recommended to blend the doors also. If you did that it would add even more money.

Wow. So it looks like I am not getting my scoops shaved yet... maybe in 10 years. Thanks for opening my eyes! Looks like I will be focusing on shaving the spoiler, 3rd brake and emblems.

Oh You wanted a Bullitt with shaved side scoops, not a bitch with shaved rodents. My bad.

Seriously though, I have a pic somewhere. I will find it.

I shaved the emblems on the fender and the one on the trunk, my spoiler holes and my trunk lock.

Trunk Lock:

One of the fenders:

I will take pics of the spoiler delete after work. And better close-ups
