Top speed with 4.10 gears

I know I know, we are sick and tired of gear questions. But I haven't found an answer to this nor have I come to any conclusions using a gear calculator.

So, I put my faith in you guys (and gals).

What will my approx top speed be with 4.10 gears?
You see my mods in my sig. It has a tune.
Tires I use are 245/35/19 for DD and will have a set of 275/30/19 on the rear for tracks.

I'm not sure about my rev stop..it's like 5 months since I sat in the car...but stock is 6000 rpms if I'm not mistaken....

I get that to around 103 mph with the calculators....is that correct?

Using the tire Size Calculator your rear tires get 816 revolutions per mile. Slightly more than the stock 245/45-17's 810 revolutions per mile.
Calculator: Tire Size Calculator - tire & wheel plus sizing

Plugging that into Cliffyk's "How fast each gear" calculator (note: you have to tweek the tire diameter to get 816 revolutions per mile) and you get 107.6 mph in fourth and 173.6 mph in 5th (T-3650 transmission) with 4.10 gears at 6000 rpms.
Calculator: http://www.paladinmicro.com/pmicro.php

Of course, top speed in fifth is limited by horsepower not rpms.

So in other words, with an auto, I'll top out at 107 mph? From a previous ~140 mph (though it took forever to get from 125 to 140 :D )

Topping out below 200 kph (~125 mph) feels "slow"...not at the strip but on tracks like nĂĽrburgring with its long long straight....

Should I perhaps stay with 3.73 gears?

Since third on an auto and forth on a manual have the same 1:1 gear ratio then its 107.6 mph in drive. Technically, it calculates to 153.7 in overdrive but it is my understanding that running hard in overdrive will tear up your transmission. I've read that it tries to engage both drive and overdrive at the same time. That's why it recommended to turn overdrive off.

Edit: We posted at the same time. 3.73s increases your top speed in drive to somewhere around 118.3 mph at 6000 rpms. If I calculated it correctly that's 190.4 kph. I like kph. It sounds really fast.

yeah that's what I've read as well...I'll think about which gears to go with.
Thanks for your help.

Can I, with my tuner, set the default overdrive setting to O/D Off?

Its limited by power and drag. On a stockish car you'll be limited to around 140. With a Tremec 3650 and 245/45/17 tires, 4.10's will give you a hypothetical top speed of almost 175.

I'm sick of my friends talking about gearing and top speed since there are a lot more things going into that equation. My friend claims his RS-X can go 155 soley based on the fact that the gearing would allow it before redline. Hey guess what, with my 4r70w and 3.27's my hypothetical top speed at redline is 194.3 mph! Suck it!

My friend owns a 06 RSX and I drove it and topped out at 157mph thats hitting revlimiter with full bolt ons. My old built Acura Integra topped out at 172mph. I dont care about top speed anymore its all about that hp and tq only counts if you can put that powa down.

Ive only gone 110 in my auto 2002 mustang gt with 285-35/17 and stock thats because I dont wan tto mess up my tranny and.i slow down. And I had o/d on. Just watch it and research before going that fast. And check ur tires speed rating.

Here's my How Much Horsepower Does it Take to Go How Fast? calculator.

This is its output using typical parameters for a new-edge GT:

Here is the tabular data for typical n/a top speeds:

To calculate your vehicle's top speed you need a dyno chart, and need to do a bit of "back and forth" to zero in on the final number.

For example, using my '03 GT with 3.73 gears and an older dyno chart:

Image

I will pick a top speed from the table--let's say 155 mph.

The table shows that at 155 mph, with 3.73 gears, the engine would be spinning 4840 rpm (2nd column, middle number) and it would take 227.1 rwHP to sustain that speed. So, going to my dyno chart you can see that at 4840 RPM my engine can deliver 250 rwHP or so--more than 227, so let's try again.

The table shows that 160 mph would take 248.8 rwHP at 4990 rpm. Looking at the dyno chart you can see that there is still 250 rwHP at 4990 rpm--so it appears that 160 mph would be the "pedal to the metal" top speed for my car.

The fastest I have had it going was a bit over 146 per my GPS, and it had some left and I think on flat ground with no wind you could have waited and gotten within reach of 160...

--------------------------------------------------------
One other comment, the tire diameters and revs/mile used on both my calculators are 97% of the calculated tire diameter. I use that factor because a loaded tire has a lesser effective tire than its calculated/unloaded diameter. This improves the accuracy of the calculators...

I hit 143(in an auto) for a bit on mine over seas that was with a stock rear end and a catback no tune or anything but it wasnt at the redline but it seems as if the car was out of steam or wouldnt go past 143mph(loved the highways in Germany)!

Same exact thing here. I know I'm a totally different ball game though. I have 3.55's as well.

I love this thread =D!!! On my stock 3.27s with a 4r70w I've topped out my speedo @ 150 =). Whatever you do...don't bang into O/D at WOT... Found this out while doing 150mph trying to keep up with a Termi that was doing 170mph... Yeah..no bueno. Trans Malfunction light anyone?

#50 ·
So in turn no fifth gear. Right? Haha
Auto's are different from manual transmissions. At WOT the auto is trying to downshift into a "passing" gear. I've been told that causes it to engage both third and fourth at the same time thus, damaging the transmission.

That is not a problem with a manual transmission. I have heard of people who are geared too low going to fifth in the quarter.

Slamming into od under wot...do u mean pressing the od button?
Being used to only stick cars....I did that a few times in the beginning so now i have some issues with the neutral to 1st shift....

Essentially no 5th gear lol. And the automatic trans is not meant to hold the pressure of shifting into o/d at WOT. When this happened to me, I was already at 140 before it hit o/d, and once I began to decelerate the trans malfunction light came on and the car started acting funny. So banging o/d is pretty much shifting into o/d at a high speed, which causes it to overheat and potentially break. And i do nto mean pressing the button. It automatically shifts into o/d unless you previously turn it off.
