How necessary are they. I've read on different forums that you do and you don't. Alot of the factory s/c cars only come with a boost gauge. So what are your guy's thoughts

You don't technically need any of them but when pushing a stock engine to the limit I'd say a boost and A/F gauge are a must, at least one.
Considering it's the whole cost of a new engine you're playing with you're going to want to know if you're running a little too lean or making a little more boost than you should.

I have been having the kenne bell on my car since early 05 and only put a boost guage in a year ago just to see how much boost I was making. I am not a show person so never was interested to show off a bunch of gauges on the A-pillar.

I've come around to using three. I used to only think two.

I think you should have at least a fuel pressure gauge, a wide-band A/F, and a boost gauge. For these reasons; the fuel pressure gauge will catch fuel system issues before the A/F will, the boost gauge will catch blower/turbo issues (Belt slip or Waste Gate/BOV and leaking issues) and a A/F gauge will tell you of post combustion issues (spark, fuel injectors or worse.) before anything can get to torn up for you to shut down. Unless your unlucky of coarse and do something like vent the block.

Maybe not...but he sure has shown me the rearend of his mustang, as he opened up his KB and blew my doors off on the highway more than once...lol

Wideband and a/f are a smart purchase.. You definitely want to keep an eye on your motor and catch a potential problem early. It'd certainly be cheaper than fixing your motor, hehe

i run a boost gauge to make sure I'm getting all the power while making sure the s/c is working at WOT.

and I run the fuel pressure gauge to make sure that the fuel pump is working properly, cause god for bid if the fuel pump fails, I go WOT, I'll be running dangerously lean!

I say if you don't pay attention to the Alt/CEL/ABS or other lights you already have than don't bother adding more distracting things ...

Oh, you do pay attention to those things ... ??? Get a fuel pressure gauge and boost gauge at least ... accurate water temp is also advisable. Like any indicator, you don't look at 'cause things are right ... you look at them to keep things from going wrong or going WAY wrong.

I've always wondered if gauges for FI are like laser detectors - merely indicators that you're already screwed.
Interesting analogy ... IMO that would apply to any type of radar detection ... rule of thumb is, if you see it ... it see's you. :)

But, accurate engine ops indication is a good way to only get a 1/2" #2 stuck in your ass vs. 4" #10

WB a/f is a must for any FI. how you gonna do datalogging w/out a WB? also fuel pressure and boost is what i got w/ the WB. keeps an eye on the new stuff you added to the mustang that wasn't stock. you could have things going wrong, and the gauges will point you in the right direction before it goes BOOM. the gauges will give you a clue to what is functioning improperly, whereas without them you would have no clue. sure you could get by without them, but if you spend 5k on a SC, a few extra hundred to make sure its running well is a drop in the bucket.
