i am replacing the head gaskets on my 96 gt it has cold air intaks from bbk and a throttlebody upgrade from bbk 70 mm i was told it has a racing clutch in it as well and dont know anything else about it any advice on what to get woul be great i want a street machine but not a drag car !!!

Upgrade your exhaust, all the air in the world going into your engine won't produce good numbers if it's choked up on the outside.

If you're replacing your head gasket, this would be the BEST time to do a PI head swap. There's a ton of info out there about this, since it's done all the time. Won't cost you more than a couple hundred bucks, and will be one of the largest HP increases you can do to your car without going forced induction. A quick google, and you get this.

Feel free to ask around, most people have expierience with this.

also i do believe it is a upgraded exaust system but not sure what kind sounds great and they ran it out the side of the car so looks good aswell doesnt look very old at all either will it be stamped on my muffler what it is so i can check

To the engine people will tell you 40, but to the wheels its about 30. Oh, and b/c you are still using the 96-98 block it will increase your compression levels :D

I'd also check and see if you can find anyone who can port them for cheap. You might as well while their out.

ok so let me recap and see if i understand i am gonna swap out my heads with those off a 99 or newer right or is it something i add to my existing heads and what else should i do while i have it apart add headers just got the stock ones on there now

Ok, being that I just went through a lot of this:

You would be swapping your heads completely for 99-04 gt heads, gaining 30 hp.

While your engine is open it is the best time to do anything you have money for (to save on labor) Honestly, I would save a little while to have more to play with when you open everything up. Things to do while the engine is open:

You WILL HAVE TO swap to the 99-04 manifold or get the adapters to the new heads.

Porting the 99-04 heads. (you can do this before taking the engine apart.)

Cams- lots of hp added

IF you are taking the engine completely out. LIGHT WEIGHT FLYWHEEL- doesn't add hp, but it allows your rpms to fly up a lot quicker, so your acceleration is faster. BEST PART I EVER PUT ON MY CAR

Cold air intake, Plenum and Throttle body, would be next. You might want to do a MAF.

Headers are very controversial.. on 4.6 they don't add that much hp for the money..

TUNER!- Even if you only get the heads you will want to get a hand held tuner (predator or SCT) will gain about 15-20hp

In all of this Craigslist and Ebay are your best friend!!! Just don't buy junk. Ask questions and check stuff out.

Sorry, I see you got the TB Plenum and CAI..

Get an off road H pipe!.. Or X.. But the H sounds thoatier and will definitely give you the sound your looking for.

i already have most of the top end apart still trying to get the heads out lol exaust manifold is being uncoperative but i should have the timing chain cover off taday or tomorow god i hope i do i will see about the head swap for sure i was thinking of buying a set of racing heads from american muscle but dont want to spend all my cash just on them there 1400

yeah man I don't blame you. Call around and see if you can find a place that will port regular PI heads.

oh i plan on doing that too eventually but i want something that will fly before i go to spraying prolly have to wait till next year for that but it will be in there sooner or later just in case i want to go play at the strip with it

Well other then a PI swap, your not going to just "fly". With full boltons and a tune you may push 210rwhp or less.

I would just spray it and go from there. Because other then that your looking at spending hundreds on boltons that arnt getting you very far, when you could spend a few hundred on spray and go far.

There's always the flipside of the equation: reduce weight. Most weight reduction is free, until you hit the point where you're replacing heavy parts with lighter versions (i.e. tubular k-member). You can pull a couple hundred pounds out of the car for nothing more than labor.

yeh but if i put in the nos i will fry my motor eventually trust me i love the sound of saying it's in ther i have always been a throttle jockey but i think i would get carried away and fry the motor i would like to keep it reasonable but am gonna shoot for 180 mph top speed and low 8's in the 1/8th would be plenty fast or 12's in the quarter would be great
