I just hit 90k miles and I've done all of the routine service except changing the transmission fluid. I have an automatic and im wodering Is that something I can manage to do, without running into problems, with regular tools I have at home? Or is it better to take it somewhere to have it done?

For every one person that tells you to change fluid/filter you'll find another that says leave it alone. Whether it's a change or a flush, I stay away from them and don't recommend them. My reasoning is that as the clutches in the trans wear, the waste acts as a friction additive. When you change fluid, you remove any remnants from the worn clutches. Just my opinion, and it will always be my opinion, but don't touch the trans unless it's giving you problems.

The problem comes in when all that crap floating in the fluid starts plugging things. Then valves don't actuate properly, it starts slipping, shifting funny, etc... Or of greater concern if they plug the filter you can burn up a pump due to a lack of fluid flow. (Very rare mind you.) So that garbage can cause problems. Whether or not to change it is up to you. I'm sure changing it can't hurt, but it may not be necessary. Normally (but not always) a transmission will start giving you subtle hints it's time to clean things out.

For what it's worth, after my bad experience with an automatic, I think I'm going to stick to a manual. There's a hell of a lot less than can go wrong, and a hell of a lot easier to fix. Though going with an auto if I had a killer turbo setup, or to get the 850 ft-lb rating on the Ram isn't out of the question. :shiftyeyes

Alright, thanks for all your help.

If I had a choice now id pick a manual, but the car looked to good to pass up when it was sitting on the lot, and it just happened to have an auto instead so I went with it.

You can always go with a stick when your auto gives up the ghost. I just got my 2002 GT back a couple weeks ago swapping it from 4R70W to a T3650 from Promotion Powertrain. It's a ton of fun!
