Had a leak at the gas tank filler for the last couple weeks. Did some research seems the 16$ rubber grommet at the tank rots out. Bought said grommet/seal from the ford dealer and set to work.
empty trunk contents, remove trunk interior trim
jack right rear up
remove wheel
lowered tank
Observed the fuel fill neck, ford wraps the steel filler neck in a plastic wire loom type material. I see this plastic is packed with debris. Removed the plastic to inspect and an unbelievable amount of dirt and rust came off with it. The steel filler neck was rusted through because this plastic ford puts on it retains dirt and moisture. Back to the ford dealer and spent 150$ this time. Explain to the friendly parts dudes how the design is ****, they agree. Went home and installed mostly problem free.
Protip:
That seal/grommet at the tank installs much easier if you put it in some hot ass water first to soften it up.
Hopefully this takes care of my PO442 "evap system small leak" code.
