Will do, thanks all

I just use simple green. Like the one guy said, let the car warm up, spray it with whatever cleaner and let it sit and steam clean. Then I just use a spray nozzle on the hose. Before I do anything I wrap the alternator with a blue shopping bag. And I also pull the whole intake off at the throttle body and clamp a blue bag to that. That gives me good access to the alternator. Just don't spray directly at the alternator or TB because you don't want it in either of them. Then you can use a foaming tire shine once that's done and it will look good.
k so ill need some foaming tire shine, simple clean, and whatever engine cleaner i want then to get this all done?

The simple green is the cleaner. Its just an all purpose degreaser that works really good. So with that or an actual engine cleaner. Is usually in a clear spray bottle and it GREEN. LOL

man, i dont know **** about all this stuff.. lol thanks

My parents have a dirt street and driveway. I know what it looks like if you don't clean it.

my driveways all gravel, and its like half a mile long of driving on it to get to my house, it leaves me very unmotivated to clean my car lol so much dust. Ive had my car up on jacks, and within 2 days a dirt dobber had built one of their bastard mud houses on my rear rotor

Dude. That engine bay is going to work. It's not going to be as simple as spray, soak and rinse. Since you don't know a whole lot about motors I would not want to spray it down at the car wash. I have done it before but I know where to and where not to spray it with any volume/pressure of water. You will be fine spraying it any where with a light mist for rinsing, even your alternator, computer and fuse box. Just don't use that pressure sprayer thingy.

Anyways that much dirt and time is going to need an effort. If you are not going to get it steam cleaned you are going to have to scrub with a bristle brush or whatever. Just don't expect miracles. Probably take you 3-4 washes before that engine bay looks real pretty again.

Try going to the carwash before the motor gets hot as scrub it with the foam brush but not on the alternater? Then like boss said light wash I also noticed tuff stuff carpet cleaner displaces dust pretty well

Use a garden hose on low pressure, enough to rinse the engine without blasting the hell out of it.

All you really need is simple green and water man. Everything else is trivial.

Cover the alternator & air intake. I clean my engine every 4 months this way, and I haven't once hurt it. Gotta remember that these cars are machines - they're not going to crumble or break that easily haha. As long as you follow what people have suggested you'll be fine.

As far as that Gunk stuff goes, it's alright. I used it, and I got MUCH better results with simple green. I still use the protectant though, it's pretty good.

Should I dilute the simple green any? And do I turn the car off after I spray the engine with simple green? I'm about to get to work on the engine so that's my I'm bringing up this thread lol

---------- Post added at 01:17 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:11 PM ----------

Also, should I just completely remove my intake and clean that separately? Would it **** my engine up any if I took it off before I started my engine?

Nvm, I'm dumb lol

I just did mine yesterday. I don't delute my simple green. You car should not be running.

This is how I do it.

Spray her down with the hose with spray nozzle. No filter or alternator in direct path of water. Don't be afraid, you won't hurt anything.

Spray the **** out of it with simple green. Let it sit for 15-20 min

Yesterday I tried this extra step and sprayed it down with wheel tire cleaner and it worked good. Let that sit for 10 min

Spray it Down with the hose again

Wipe down some of the dusty areas that you missed with a rag while soaking up so of the heavy water spots.

Spray the **** out of it with tire shine and let it sit for a few min. Then get a rag and soak up the heavy puddle spots and rub it into the missed spots.

Takes me about a hour and a half to do this all.

Usually I take the whole intake off but this time I didn't because I have my nitrous nozzle in it and didn't want to mess with it. So I just pulled the filter, put a plastic shopping bag over the hole and used the clamp to hold it on tight.

K, I just sprayed it all, used like a third of the bottle too. It didn't steam or anything, but I'm lettin it sit now. Pretty much doused the whole engine compartment down with it

---------- Post added at 02:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:49 PM ----------

Is it ok to spray like everywhere in the engine compartment, not just the engine? Because that's what I did lol

Yes spray everything. Don't be afraid

And he lives in a gravel road, paying for it to look good will get expensive quick.

I'd rather do anything that I can do myself. It's more fun that way, plus a learning experience lol

This is after the second clean through, should I just let it sit in the sun to dry it?

The engine looks like 10 times better :D it doesn't seem to be cleaning much dirt off the the painted parts tho. Ima do another spray down and focus on all the dirty parts

There's the finished result,
Looks pretty good. Should I just let it air dry or get as much dried up with a towel as I can? I have a lead blower at my house, so I might just re-wet it when I get home and dry it with the leaf blower. thanks for all the help guys!

Cleaning it too often with APCs, mostly simple green, even when diluted will corrode the aluminum.
Yeah I read about that...

Hose that shot down. Lol. But no sometimes you need to wipe a little dirt.

I also don't even dry it. Once I'm done and ready for the tire shine, I just spray it everywhere and let it all run off. It will get most of the water off.

I see. Ill probly buy some tire shine on the way home then! Thanks

Also, guys...be careful about getting water down your spark plug holes with overly enthusiastic spraying. If you do, it will cause a misfire on the wet cylinder.

You can also go crazy, but then you will need to pull all the COP's, blast out the spark plug holes with compressed air until dry, then re-install your COP's with some fresh dielectric grease.

As previously stated, don't get the fuse box wet, or the alternator, air filter, MAF sensor area, or computer (ECM, ECU, PCM, PCU, whatever you want to call it) main connector plugs.

For a finishing touch on the hoses and plastics, use some Turtle-Wax brand (green can) tire shine foam. Shoot it on a rag and rub it here you want to add the clean fresh shine.

It rubs the turtle wax on the plastic, or else it gets the hose again. It does this whenever it's told.

what a COP, MAF sensor area, and im guessing the cumputer plugs are the things i had foil on? next time i water that area ill blow some of the water out where the plugs are, thanks!
