Hey guys,
I've got a squeaking/squealing noise coming from one of my pullies up front. I'm gonna investigate further tomorrow but if you guys can give me any advice or input to save me some time that'd be awesome. It's been doing it for awhile now but seems alot worse than before. The noise is pretty much constant whether I'm at idle, or cruising/accelerating. Im guessing its a bad belt, or maybe a water pump pully/alt/or ac pulley. Just not sure the best way to tell which one it is.

here's a video. thanks!!

Since you say the sound is pretty much constant at idle or acceleration, I would remove the belt for a few seconds and crank the car to make such it is the pulley. You want hurt anything by removing the belt for 4 or 5 seconds to verify if it is a pulley squealing. If the squeak is still there then you might have another problem. Normally a squeaking pulley will increase the squeaks with the engine speed.

Take a can of WD40 and spray it on each pulley. If you notice that the sound go's away you have found your problem. Just try to not get that wd40 on the belt. I had that exact problem recently, and i was able to find the problem pulley instantly using this method

Thanks guys, I'll try spinning them and adding wd40. By saying it was constant at idle, I meant that the sound stays there and doesn't go away. It does get faster and slower with engine speed though. Bad choice of word lol

+1

When I had this issue last year I kept it running and figured out which pulley it was, so I just sprayed WD40 on it... Problem solved. But now it's faintly coming back.. just started yesterday... time for another can!

Awesome! I will try this. You sort of spray the middle of the pully? I wonder if it'd be the pulley or the accessory it drives... I will report back when I know which one it is!

+1 on spraying the pulleys. Hit it in the center where the bearings would be. Mine did it a couple years back, turned out to be a idler pulley.

Yeah. I just sprayed it from the front and it worked fine.
Let us know how it goes tomorrow!

Use silicone spray instead of wd40. Less mess, more lubricating, no smell, won't hurt the belt. My personal preference, Liquid Wrench
Yea thats is true, i like silicone spray better. But i figured many people dont have that, while most people have a can of wd40

OP, i just use the spray to figure out which pulley it is. Once you figure out which pulley it is i would replace it. You can risk that the pulley breaks off the bearings and shoots out into your engine bay.

Oh yea, I'll definitely be replacing whichever pulley has an issue

Well, I took the belt off and spun each pulley by hand. Couldnt tell from that. Then with the engine running, I sprayed wd40 on the alternator pulley, then the tensioner. It seems to be the tensioner!! It stopped squeaking almost as soon as I sprayed it. The squeaking then came back a little while later so it definitely needs some attention.

Should I buy a whole new tensioner assembly? It's got 120k miles on it so I could see it being a bit worn out.
Thanks again for the help guys

When you buy a tensioner it will come with a new pulley which is what you want.. the new pulley comes with a brand new bearing so just install the entire assmebly.
