So i went to emissions AGAIN!!! i put my buddies stock exhaust on that he uses every year to pass emissions i put a bottle of rubbing alcohol with a full tank of 91octane and unplugged the FMU

Hydrocarbons this vehicle: 3.92 the state standards: 1.60 FAIL

Carbon Monoxide this vehicle:16.21 the state standards: 15.00 FAIL

Oxides Of nitrogen this vehicle:2.29 standards: 2.50 PASS

i dont know what else to do besides having to end up taking off the supercharger but i dont wanna do that :sorry any ideas of what i can try?

would pulling an Injector help the carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons go down? I have the timing around 9ish right now

Did you ever check compression like I pointed out in your previous thread? You have some type of combustion issue caused by poor compression, something in there worn out, leaking FI, valve, etc.. or a tune/EEC4 that is not going right (like temp sensor, too low of a thermostat or cam that is not emissions friendly. Do a dyno run or a wide band and get some A/F numbers. Did you ever pull codes?

nope theres no codes and its a stock cam and nope never checked the compression and i never checked the thermostat but it sits at 140degrees never gets any higher

The car is designed to run @ 180-190* at 140 the ECU is richening up the mixture hence the hydrocarbons and CO, i would get a stock thermostat , run 87 octane and try again .

damn thats gonna be a pain in the ass the supercharger plate is right infront of everything :-(

I'm not familiar with the Paxton bracket but the Vortech bracket is in front of it and it is not that hard. On a used SC charged car that your pushing, that thermostat will be one of the easier things you'll be doing ;)

On that note though... 140F is not good for anything. Oil temperature usually runs about 20-25 more than the water temperature, that puts your oil at a temperature where moisture collects and that causes all kinds of bad things long term (sludge, acidic build up, additive depletion, blah blah). The stock gauge could be way off, do you have an efan and does it cycle with temp or just always on?

haha he has his own trouble to deal with right now getting his car back together

#13 ·
it has the stock clutch fan thats cracked to **** between the blades and i will put the 180degree stat in tomorrow an see what happens at emissions again

disconnect the blower for the test , If you run higher octane with a ~ 9.0:1 motor with 9* initial your gonna run into the same problem's higher octane burns slower . I would Run the car as designed from the factory
10* initial ( read w/ the spout disconnected) with 87 octane , the air pump hooked up , and stock style intake with the Maf in a relativley stock location .

Not to thread jack, but anytime an aftermarket supercharges is installed there is going to be problems with emissions?

1. get rid of 140 thermo, i didnt ever know they made them that cold, this is a EFI motor that it not designed to run that cold, even a 160 is told cold, id use a stock one for emissions and then after run a 180

2. knock timing down AS MUCH AS U CAN, i ran like 0 degrees when i went in, i swear my escort felt faster

3. heat up cats before u go in to test,

4.id say run 87 just for emissions

5. rubbing alcohol in fuel...i heard all sorts of stuff ppl dump into their tanks, i dont know man, those 4 cats on a factory pipe should do the work,

honestly dont know if anyone ever tried this, but how bout wrapping your headers, and cats to keep more heat in? wouldnt that help burn more emissions?

What is backing off his timming gonna do ? He's failing Hydro and Co which is unburnt fuel and a incomplete combustion byproduct , backing of the timing is not going to make either of these better .

#25 ·
so i went again! i put the timing at 10 put the 180 degree thermostat in put this stuff called gauranteed to pass **** that a couple people swear by and it still failed the same HC and COs. well i was thinking what if i just take the belt off the blower and disconnect the FMU well that help pass or do i have to take off the complete head unit?

#30 ·
I FINALLY PASSED EMISSIONS!!!! i disconnected the blower shoved the intake underneath it put a stock MAF that was sitting in the back of my car pulled the belt off put the timing to 10 and a bottle of gauranteed to pass **** and it passed like a CHAMP!!!

Hydrocarbons this vehicle: 0.53 standards 1.60 PASS

Carbon Monoxide this vehicle: 1.60 standards 15.00 PASS

Nitrogen this vehicle: 2.14 standards 2.50 PASS

haha i had the head unit still there just no belt and the guy looked at it and kinda didnt know what it was and turned away and gave the guy sitting in the car a thumbs up to run the driving test for the sniffer hahaha well 2 year tags for 42bucks aint bad

#38 ·
****in' a im not looking forward to when my **** is due for the sniffer again at the ends of 2011.

I took it to get tested, passed with my stock heads/cam then 3 days later started my tear down for my current head/cam combo. also tore off the emissions junk, and a/c, haha

Colorado uses road side sniffing stations on the highway to try and catch cars that are running like ****. but if you pass like 4 of them and they dont catch a problem, they consider that passing an emissions test.

in other words, im hoping I can drive past these stations with the clutch pushed in, and pass, so I don't have to go into a station, and have them laugh at me when they find no smog pump, and the car is cammin' like a mofo.
