I've been meaning to change mine lately. idk if has ever been changed and my car has felt sluggish more and more ever since i bought it. i know i have some tiny exhaust leaks, but when the engine heats up they go away. but anyway, just wanted to know if the fuel filter has a large role.

Yes, changing the fuel filters can help with mpg because if it is clogged it lowers the level of power which in essence means you drive harder, and it could also mean that if it is clogged and not getting the fuel that it need the computer will richen the mixture which decreases the gas mileage.

If it is feeling sluggish, it would be wise to change the filters :)

Also for future reference, a clogged fuel filter will make your pump work harder and shorten its life, so it's best to change it if there is a question of integrity ;)

dont mean to Hi-jack the thread, but I got a questioned related to fuel filters, that has always made me think about it.

Say someone is mad at you and they seek revenge by pouring sugar in your gas tank. Would the fuel filter stop any sugar from going into the enjectors, engine, ext?

^ I think they did that on mythbusters and the sugar didnt hurt anything. They also tried bleach and mothballs. Neither hurt the engine (Short term anyway) except for the bleach which rusted the inside of the tank. The sugar would likely dissolve in the gas so the filter wouldnt help.

If you are hearing the pump more than usual, that is definitely not good. If you are changing it tonight, it should still be alright. IMHO the fuel filter should get changed every 2 years max. At least on cars with a seperate filter like ours, the in tank units longer because of the cost and work involved. Just some cheap insurance against costly repairs.

I run a napa fuel filter. I really wanna get a motorcraft and cut them both open and see the difference.

I swapped mine out for a motorcraft roughly 9,000 miles ago. I only saw slight gains in MPG.

i changed mine.. and my O2's... got exhaust.. spark plugs... no difference in my gas mileage at all.

I guess my car's just a bi-polar bitch when it comes to MPG. :p

Motorcraft...on my GT I have a Purolator, Advance didn't have a Motorcraft piece. Not gonna be a big difference here with brands...

And 15k for a fuel filter is too often. Not necessary to change it so frequently. I'm pretty sure Ford calls for it at every 60k.

Edit: Unless the filter is causing restriction in the gas flow, you won't notice an increase in MPG when replacing it. Older engines get worse gas mileage than when they were brand spanking new. This is just reality. Sure, there are tons of things you can do to help keep it up, but the main thing is you right foot, unless there's really an issue someplace. Just don't expect 39mpg....I had to.
