Grinding/squeaking from rear, whats it sound like?

I noticed my car making a sort of squeaking sound almost like a bad wheel bearing on what sounds like the rear of the vehicle when turning, and at slow speeds when turning the rear end makes a clunking/grinding noise. I am thinking it could be one of two things: a bad wheel bearing, or something bad in the diff. Maybe bad clutch packs.

The only thing that's unusual about it is that it only makes those noises after extended driving. Whenever I drive from Daytona to Orlando (about an hour) it makes the noise, and visa versa. But it makes absolutely no noticeable sounds when just driving around town. Any ideas?

When doing burnouts do you get one wheel spinning? If yes then it could be the clutch paks. Brakes have a slightly higher pitched tone to them when the rub, while the diff is a deeper grinding as it is in fluid.

Pending the miles and the severity of the problem you may get along a bit longer with a fluid change.

I haven't done any rear diff servicing to this car since I have owned it (about 3 years). Miles are high, if its the rear diff then I expect I'll need to change out the clutch packs and depending on the condition, possibly the gears. I was planning on spending my tax money on some mods, but I guess I'll be spending it on repairs instead. I will be replacing the brake pads and can check to see if they are rubbing or not when I do that, and I'll probably have a look at the diff and change the fluid on the same day. Though I don't have a feeling the problem is too severe given that the noises are only apparent after long drives.

In the mean time I guess I can find somewhere to burn some rubber and check out the skids, might give a better idea on the problem. If there are two marks as normal does it mean that the rear diff has absolutely no problems? Or is it still possible parts need replacing back there?

Nobody thinks its a wheel bearing? That'd be so much easier and cheap to fix :(

You might still spin both even if the diff is bad, but check to see if one mark is darker than the other, from working in a shop I found out its usually just a fluid flush with friction modifier. A wheel bearing you'd still have to flush fluid....just saying, replace them while you got the cover off

Two birds one stone I suppose. The car has about 160k on the body and rolling parts, so I'm sure that stuff is about due for replacing. It's just kind of pricey replacing parts that may have not even failed yet, dontcha think? Though I found a FRPP set of bearings for a decent price on AM. Think I should do a whole rebuild of the rear end with a kit like this?

Or would you guys just stick with replacing the bearings and fluid? If it turns out to be the clutch packs I'll have to tear it all down again anyway, but on the other hand if the fluid and bearings fix the issue, I'll have extra insurance for my rear end! Then a whole new set of questions arise on if I should get a whole new stock diff, or just replace the clutch packs. Decisions, decisions...

Mine had 86k on it and the clutch paks went. I got clunking reversing out of the driveway and grinding around slow cornnering in parking lots. The clunking turned out to be play in the spider gears caused by the clutches being so worn everything pushed outwards creating slack. I bought the rebuild kit from american muscle with the royal purple. Turns out even with the built in friction modifier that a month after putting it all back together I needed to add a bottle of modifier to get rid of some slight grinding around corners again.

click the picture for a video of how much play I had in the rear due to worn clutches in the diff

That is a ridiculous amount of play. Did you need to replace the differential or just the clutch packs? I'm assuming this is what you bought and it fixed everything good as new?

Did you happen to also need an installation kit or were you good reusing all the other stuff, minus the diff cover gasket?

I have rear end squeak/squeal. Brake pads fell off and caliper is grinding into the rotor :(
Bought new pads and rotor today but forgot to rent the tool for the caliper.

This is brutal. I don't see any issues with my brakes as of yet, except that they need new pads and the brake booster is losing vacuum (I believe, haven't had a chance to test it yet).

Not to jack your thread but i kind of have the same problem. Only thing is mine does it after its been sitting for a few hours and when i back up turning right. It doesn't do it much but it does. If i back up straight or to the left it does not make the noise

Sort of the opposite for me I guess, since mine does it only after driving for an hour or two. Weird. Best thing to do is check everything out, starting from the wheels and moving inward. I still need to do this, but check the breaks, then the wheel bearings, then the driveshaft (just to be sure) and then the differential. I plan on checking everything except the differential this weekend. If everything else is good to go, I'll order the stuff to rebuild the diff and crack it open next weekend. No sense in opening it up twice in one month.
