I had the chance to meet a major HP motor builder. When I say Major I'm talking 2500-3000 alc funny car motor builder, in some respects he is called the number 1 builder in the US. A buddy of mine runs a funny car. He is building a 125,000 motor, I'm overwhelmed at the facility. I get a few minutes of time with the builder Steve. I ask him " hey I'm a big mustang guy, I'm looking at building a 408+ stroker, street strip motor, but its been a struggle to figure out what to build. He goes into this crazy alluminum block build etc etc, I said "no I'm not into that I got a budget" etc etc He says "ohh your the guy that wants 900 hp for 3 grand, I said " no I want 600 hp and low 10'2 high 9's" so he tells me hp and et's dont mix etc etc. So we get to business, we talk what i want, street motor pump gas on and on. He tells me get a good block, old 69 or so, lots of machine work, or a new man o war etc, then cam and heads are key. custom cam, heads well all this advertisement is crap. Your mentality is go trick flow, go AFR, go edelbrock, its all crap, to go fast you start with a good head and work it from there. these box cnc heads, gimmicks are all crap when making horsepower. How is a company gonna make a head to your motor? Sure you can go 10's, 9's maybe but thats pansy times, you need heads, cam and fuel worked to your needs. We use all brodix for our big horse motors, i would suggest you use a victor head, brodix or canfield for a small hp motor and have them ported per your application. The trick flow, afr, etc are just small hp gimmick heads. They spend more money in advertising than research.
