Hesitation/jerking under acceleration...help?

I apologize for the long post but want to provide as much info as I can in hopes of someone being able to help me out. I have a 6 sp 11' GT. I've had the JLT CAI and Bama tunes for at least 5 months now. I originally ran 87 tunes and then decided I wanted to get all the power I could, so I requested 93 tunes. At the same time, I had a Flowmaster cat-back installed. Ever since the new tunes and exhaust were added, I get a hesitation/jerking when accelerating (not even WOT). It is worse at cold starts and gradually improves as I drive. Working with Bama I've tried the idle relearn process twice, battery disconnected for 10 mins with high beam switch on, batt disconnected for 4 hours, switched stations where I purchase gas, removed and reinstalled the intake, and tried using 91 tunes. All this has managed to do is move the range I feel the hesitation from 2K-3K to now about 2500-4000. I'm really out of ideas and am willing to try almost anything short of an exorcism or voo doo witch doctor. Anyone?

Mine has always been like that during cold starts. Just let it warm up before u drive it. If its anything more than that i have no idea.

I would say idle relearn but looks like you covered that multiple times, that is the only time I have ever noticed jerking and occasionally on a cold start.

My car is extremely jerky on cold starts. I usually let my car warm up 10-15 minutes before I drive it. But there are times I do drive it cold if I'm running late to work. But it's really jerky in the lower gears at lower rpms. It's not too bad in the low-mid range. When it gets jerky, i just grab another gear. Helps out some. But when it's fully warmed, I don't really notice it.

Get a new tuner. For the mods you have it shouldn't be that complicated for Bama but I've seen many threads with guys with Bama tunes that had driveability issues. You shouldn't have to do any idle learn. It should be correct from them immediately. Or just keep tring to work with them until they can get it right.

I get it too when cold; sometimes real bad like neck breaker...Funny that mine did not do this 1-2K miles ago. I have to remember to hesitate a second on gas after shift when this happens. Always goes away after a few miles.

The jerking he speaks of is real and not driver related IMO. The driver can adjust this out by staying off gas a fraction longer after each shift but why should you have to or want to? I must adjust my gas to shift during those first few miles. This does not always happen but when it does, once warm it does not happen. Wierd thing is mine is not the standard 5.0 tune; I was thinking it was Roush related...

I always turn TC off at start; mine spins so much that TC shuts off all acceleration for a sec. Seems like it would be gradual but when mine kicks in (TC) it shuts down acceleration. I honestly don't know what the hell good it is. If I'm spinning I can let off slightly to control but the damn TC shuts it down completely...

Mine did this on the first Bama tune I used (93 with cats).. Put bbk cat deletes on and a 93 catless tune on there and it cleared it up. Just barely did it when it was cold but after a cpl minutes it was as smooth as stock. Now I got my exhaust shop to do all 3 inch piping with a Dynaflo Ultraflo X muffler, removed resonators, and connected to my Satin Black Pypes A/b... Sounds amazing but for some reason the symptom came back and I lost a touch of bottom end peppyness it feels like. Explain that one? haha

With Bama tune and jlt intake like you have I start car shut off TC and start driving, never over 3k rpm or hard shifts for about the first 5 minutes, no hesitation no issues. Sorry to hear that you are having issues with your Bama tunes, but i would give the TC off and easy driving until your car warms up before doing anything else. Good luck with your issue.

TC on or off doesn't make a difference, I tried. I'm sorry to see this affects so many folks, some even with stock cars. It's 2012. There should be no need for a car to have to warm up to run smoothly. I'm not even accelerating aggresively which makes it even worse. Mine too seems to clear up after a couple minutes but that fact is that it shouldn't be happening at all.

It's the Bama tunes that are making that happen. I used to run a 93 performance tune and the jerking still happened a little but when I swapped to the 93 race tune, it jerks like crazy when it's cold. It still does it some when it's fully warmed up now too. I'm seriously thinking about getting a custom tune done but I'm also saving for a Vortech so I keep putting it off. :(

IMO .....The surging you describe is because the tune is not perfected. The 11+ cars are noted for being harder to tune for the surging issue.

Most owners don't have an issue. I was one that did have a problem. Jlt has come out with new filters that include a screen in them to help with the increased turbulence from the air due to the larger size.

I put mine on wednesday evening and issue was gone. It costs $70. I would have paid $700 based on the difference it made for me. Call Jay at Jlt. They can get you set up.

I am not thrilled I had to spend more money but I was ready to return it to stock and sell it because it was so bad. As a result it was the best money ever spent.

It doesnt bother me too much when its cold. Look at the power and stuff we are putting down with these engines... Do you expect it to be smooth as butter from a cold start??? Have you ever driven a carbed car with an electric or manual choke? LOL pat the gas 12 times, pull out the choke and pray it starts when its 20 outside? I dont think any vehicle just runs perfect from a cold start. Theres a lot going on to keep everything stable as it warms up so I'm just easy on her until she gets to operating temp. Then I put my foot through the floorboard whenever I feel like it...

Ok my explanation for this problem would be:
To lean at cold start and to much timing advance. Also check your compression.

My 98 mustang did this same thing when I tuned my vehicle to 93 octane on the dyno.

I found low compression (due to head gasket between 2 cylinders - no leaks).

When warmed up problem goes away.

Finally sent some datalogs to Bama today to be checked out and modified to be spot on. Also to fix the surging at part throttle. I called them and the first thing he said was blaming the "race" tune for being jerky and thats just the throttle response. I explained that it was not the throttle that was jerky and that throttle response is great, but that while leaving my foot and the same spot through gears at part throttle it kindof surged a little. He told me my tune should be spot on as he sent it the first time but they will take a look at it "not sounding very encouraging"... How long does Bama usually take to send a revised tune? Just curious to if they even took my phone call and email seriously, or if they will just throw some stuff around then email me back the same thing basically...

I don't think this is tune related as my stock car does it as well.

I figured it was a cold oil issue and the car is assuming x amount of oil pressure at y% of throttle position to adjust the valve timing but because of the viscosity of the oil it isn't.

Seeing as how under very low throttle and rpm there is no issue, but the further the stupid pedal gets pushed (up to 75% or so), the worse the issue becomes.

That was my best guess.
