how the hell can you tell at first glance if the car is an HO or not. The engine i have has an aftermarket intake and from what i can see the only way of telling is by the timing. any suggestionsThanks

The HO motors are fuel injected roller blocks. Can you look down your oil spout? If you can then you should see 1 of 2 things.
1: nothing at all cause there's a piece of metal to send the oil to the middle of the head on the valve covers or
2: someone removed that metal (we have to for some aftermerket rockers) in which case you should be able to see the roller rockers.
almost all of the 302's are HO unless they came from a truck
it has aftermarket weiland intake and motorsport valve covers, i am pulling the engine to freshen her up and paint the bay. so you are saying there are no HO engines prior to 88 then? Isn't this the first year for rollars
HO does'nt mean it's a roller (lifter) motor. Ford started using the HO scripting on Mustang air cleaners around 1982. The roller motors (really engines) came into full production in 1985 (some late '84s lucked out as well plus got T-5s to boot).
Doesnt HO have different firing order? So looking at plug wires in distributor you could see if its HO. But i think that the 13726548 order was used also in older engines, so that would not be 100% accurate.
What is the other firing order and when/where was it used?
yes but there was the 255ci motor in around 82 that was considered HO I think as well. Find the block casting number and we can go from there... I have a few books here that can solve this problem.
15426378 is the fireing order, and it is a 5.0 just not sure if it is an ho. ****er has way more power then my 88 that is forsure
