Hood Pins install in outer hood stops?

Hey guys, I'm looking to install some Shelby hood pins in the outer hood stop holes of my car, the same place it's installed on the Super Snakes.

Here's a picture of the install location on the Super Snake, saw it at a mustang show and decided that's where I wanted them located.

And here's a closeup of the pin and where it meets the bumpstop hole.

I'm looking for a hood pin install guide that will help me install the pins in this location. What I'm really trying to figure out is how the heck they got the nut on the underside of this piece of metal. If you look at your car, it's hollow, with a bottom side and top side, so one of the nuts has to go inside this piece, and the other on top. Problem is, I don't see a hold big enough for me to fit the nut into. Here are some pictures of what the hole looks like with the hood stop removed.

Anyone got any suggestions? Has anyone installed them in this location? I really appreciate your responses! I really want to post pics of my new hood I have and front fascia, but would like to have the pins on there first. Thanks in advance!

what kind of hood do you have? do you want to place them there for convenience?

My guess would be that the supersnake hoodpins probably are of a different design. Or, they may cut a hole in the bottom of the core support. Hard to say, but I bet I could figure something out if I had the pin and the car in front of me. Hopefully someone has done it and can tell you.

They don't look like they are a different design, they are the exact same thing from what I could see, they just have some sort of washer/ plate sitting above the contact with the car and below the nut. Other than that, everything looks to be the same.

those are the same pins I got put on mine. I have the Steeda cowl hood and I had them installed in the outer stops. I think they look much better there, and would deffinately make your hood look cluttered if installed inside. those pins are made for the gt500 when installed in outer stops and Shelby GT for the inside stops. Shelby should have a kit by now for the mods needed for that spot on the gt. i was too impatient last spring and had them installed when hood was painted and installed. be aware the pins will NOT fit flush in the groove. this happened to mine, but i just live with it. at first i was pretty bumbed, but got used to it after awhile. take a look at the pics in my garage, and talk to someone at Shelby to see if they have the kits available yet. good luck and i hope this was helpful.

I did heavy GT's and my first set in that location, tie some fishing line around the nut, use a coat hanger or a home electrical fish tape, slide the fish tape in the mounting hole and fish it towards the middle of the core support. Tape the end of the fishing line to the fish tape pull it back towards the mounting hole and then snip the fish line when it arrives to the opening.

I backed heavy's with a washer and simply pulled them both through together.

To get the pin to thread up to the nut i used a flat head screw driver through one of the nearby holes to simple get it started. From there you should be good in simply tightening everything up.

If you can, get a telescoping magnet (looks like an antenna) from your local sears or automotive supply store. Just in case the nut and washer get away from you.

Be careful pulling through, the core support gets thinner in some areas so you will get stuck a few times. Take your time.. It's not rocket science..

Here are some pictures of my hood, just went downstairs and took them. I just think the center would look way too cluttered if I put them in there, on the outside I think it would balance the appearance better. Also, I get some serious hood flutter on the sides at high speeds, especially if there is a cross wind, and I think having them out to the sides would help provide more stability.

Emay, that worked wonderfully, I had already removed the plastic cover where the hood latch is, but didn't see that the ends were open, so thank you very much for that! Did you just use washers on the top and bottom of the hole to secure the pin better? Or did you use something pretty and fancy like the picture of the one on the super snake I have above?

Now I see why u want to put them outside. Don't know what to tell you bro. If I find something I'll let you know.

Sorry I didn't see this sooner... That's where mine are.
Thanks very much, Yup, I have to say man, I was already getting the Roush front fascia, and looking at a bunch of different hoods (including ours.) I have to say that when I saw the combo on your car, I knew I couldn't live without it. Yay for insurance money!

My car was in an accident (not my fault, luckily) and had all of this installed by the ford dealership doing the collision repair work. I happen to know that they did actually order it pre-painted, and the color match is perfect. They painted my hood themselves, and the color is great on that too, they really know what they are doing. (Brandon Ford in Brandon Florida) I haven't taken it off yet, so I can't really speak as to how easy the install is, but the fit once everything is in place is perfect, and I have no reason to believe it was very difficult to install, as it looks like all of the old mounting points were used. I'd say go for it! In the end yours will look very similar to mine I'm sure. Just don't come down to Tampa, cuz I'm the only one with a mustang that looks like this, I get head turns everywhere I go (in a part of town where Ferraris and Lamborginis are seen every day) and don't want you stealing my thunder! haha. Let me know if you have any other questions, I'm going to throw up some pics of what the hood pins look like installed sometime today, they are beautiful.

Veryone is showing pics with the hood closed which does no good. Open the thing up so the rest of us can see how they mount.

Please!

Here come the finished pics

Alright guys, here are the finished pics. This is about two months after the install, so things aren't quite as pretty as they were at first. I took a lot, as this has almost turned into a how-to thread, so here are the pics with the hood open and everything I think you should see with a finished hood pin install on the outer bump stops. Let me know if you want pics of anything else.

Ok, so first, this is the install I'm modeling after. I saw this on a Super Snake at a mustang show.

As I didn't have a pretty integrated nut/washer thing, this is what I ended up with.

Now, obviously there is a nut (and washer) under this metal. I think the instructions on how to do this were detailed earlier in the thread, but this piece that the hood pin is attatched to is tubular, so you have to run a piece of string (fishing line) with a fish tape from this hole to the center of the car (where an opening big enough for the nut and washer is) and then use that to bring it out to where the bump stop is. It's a pain in the butt, and you have to remove a bunch of screws and stuff to make enough room to move everything, but it works!

Now, since this was installed in an aftermarket, two layer fiberglass hood, it made cutting the holes very tricky, as you actually have two holes per side. You have to make sure that the arc of the hood is accounted for in the size of the holes. Easier said than done. And yes, I know the holes aren't pretty! I haven't gotten around to touching them up with some paint....

Now for the pretty external pics! I went a bit crazy... I know, but here ya go.

I honestly get comments on them all the time. How they really add to how aggressive the thing looks, to (of course, girls) asking what they are and why I have them, and why they are so pretty. lol.

Anyways, I'm about to go and drill out the hole in the big pin so that the little pin will be able to sit flush on the plate on the hood... I know it's potentially weaken the pin, but I mean seriously... these things are rock solid, I don't see myself putting them to anywhere near breaking point anytime... ever.

Here's what the clearance looks like... talk about being nervous when drilling those holes!

you may want to rethink boring to whole out any bigger.
I thought about drilling the wholes out bigger on mine as well, but ther will be alot of slop. then they won't fit tightly at all. I think the only way to get them right is to have a solid pin with no whole and drill it for the correct angle. I don't know if you can even get a pin without whole already drilled.

Yup Chance, you've got it right, I'm going to drill the new holes and get it all done today, so I'll post up the pics of that once I'm done. I think it will look really good with them pointing in different directions honestly.

About the cables, Yup, mine came with them too, but I just don't like the look they give, not on my car. On some others, absolutely, but just not mine (Going for a more clean look....ish.) Also, I've heard that after a while, even with the rubber coating on the cables, they wear away at the clear-coat that they come in contact with and dull it down cuz they are always flapping around up there. But hey, if you like the look, go for it!
