Only on the top end. There seems to be less lift over 100 mph. Otherwise business as usual.

Looks good. I may end up doing more cutting down the road :p

I just wanted to cover the basics for those who want to do this mod.

Nope. I have had it to 140mph+ with no problem. I had more lift with out it cut out.

Im with DSM... without it "ramming" into the motor, this is doing nothing at all and is as pointless as it could be IMO.
To each his own. I simply hate having scoop that is not functional. That is the only real reason I cut it out.

its gonna get dirty, hard to clean car without flooding it.
Lol it will get more dust and water spots, but thats just part of it. I personally don't like the look of our 2v motors and don't plan on showing it off. so I am ok with it being dirtier.

so itss a functional non ram air intake? lets cut the door scoops out too, have a functional sunroof for the back seats

I think it would be more legit, rather than a scoop that really isnt a scoop. It could offer cooling for the engine, as well as tb temps being slightly lower. Its really more of the fact that the scoop doesn't serve a purpose other than visuals that makes it seem worth it to make it functional. The temp would be cooler and I would assume that if you ever race during the winter time that letting in all that cool air could help some? The gains may be small but its something.

it would help for winter racing BUT with the power gains for the cold air would be lost by the traction issues with the cold, tires having loss of traction. you raise a good point, Im just bored and feel like posting.

its still nonfunctional. Its doing nothing at all positive while raising the risks to have issues.

If you like it, thats all that matters. Good job.

Well that would depend on the function now wouldn't it bro? If one wanted it to function only to allow airflow as a scoop is designed for, then it is functioning as it should. Just basing it off of power gains would be a false logic. Side scoops aren't meant for anything on an old fastback but as ventilation. Consider that concept the reason behind the hood scoop. So really is it nonfunctional or is it simply not a performance mod? I for one see both pros and cons to this. water and dirt are bad, while hot summer days having ventilation is good. It could not only bring in cool air but also let out hot air as it rises. I guess it would depend how you look at it, but from the way you say its non functional I assume you mean in performance/ power gains. Not being a dick at all bro, just simply throwing some words out there to see if anyone agrees. :)

And I would be willing to bet that there is no additional cooling of under the hood. Driving down the road, air is circulating everywhere and this does nothing IMO.... It might be considered functional if the function is to work on your car when the COP's get flooded with water. Maybe if the function is to pull over and pick up your scoop off the side of the highway.

Just wanna throw in, THE WAY HE DID IT IS THE ONLY WAY TO DO IT! There is a bolt in the middle of the honeycomb that keeps the front of the scoop down and that's why he was able to go 140 and not have to stop to pick it up off the side of the highway. If you choose to open your hood scoop, drill the honeycomb, and maybe dress it up with a billet grille or spray it a deep black so it looks open. I made the mistake of cutting it all the way open and while I love the look, its a ticking time bomb...New scoops are impossible to find for under $100...

This was done on my car when I bought it three years ago. every time it rained good and hard if i drove anywhere I started getting a flashing CEL and bucking, rough running... it was letting rain in and soaking the back COPS on both side of the motor. i used some heavy duty Butyl backed foil tape to re seal it and have not had a problem since.

also i did do a few tests with a temp probe and an laser temp gauge...

under hood ambient was the same with hole and without hole.

laser temp taken on intake plenum was also the same....

really dont see any gains with it, and now that I no longer have it my hood actually seems more settled and no longer lifts any at speed.

dude...5 minutes i will never get back....i believe you would successfully soak the motor and electrical components, aquire debris and get some pretty wicked hood rattle...is this the new definition of shaker hood...or shook right off hood....i dont see this one becoming a sticky

No refund for your time. All I can say is that I did this on my last GT and never had an issue. No electrical issues or hood rattle. Just thought I would share how I made it functional for those who have asked.

and the sti does also, its a piss poor design because of heat soak into the top mount causes hot air into the engine. running no intercooler would be a better design. the top mount is used because of the rally design would not be clogged with debris
