ok, can you guys inform me about this. I think this is going to be my mod for the summer.

I think i have decided on 4:10's.

and now i need help deciding on the axles and the Diff.

My plans for the car is to have a Road race/strip car. i know i can't have both but which Diff will give me the best balance between Launches and Cornering? the rest of my suspension will come next year. when i say road race i really don't mean road race, More like, really good handling daily driver haha. so what kind of diff would be good for handling plus lunching etc. I will not go to the strip everyweekend. more like a couple times a summer. So do i really need to even upgrade the axles and diff. Not sure if i'll ever run slicks but i might. who knows. too early to tell. All my lunching is really around town and such, just dickin around. i can tell you i definitly will have Drag radials one of these days.

Powerwise i plan to have to the car get to 430rwhp in the next couple of years. So i want something that can hold the power and won't break.

so what do you guys suggest for me?

budget, I would like to see as close to $1,000 as possible. I have found a nice/reliable shop that will install gear for 260.00. but i have no idea how much a decent diff will cost/axles. Gears are 160ish? and i know tuner is 379 so already im quite up there, so im sure i'll have to go over 1000 but i would like to stay as close to 1000 as i can without cutting corners.

31 spline diffe w/ carbon clutches, decent axles, gears of your choice, and you are set. that is a good balance, and will hold up to quiet a bit and be comfortable on the street as well. the termi's are set up with that diff set up and are holding a lot on them as well. that set up wont hurt the pocket book either. i think i have about $550 in my built set up.

if you dont mind doin some work, go find an explorer with 4x4 or a mid 80's to 96 F-150 with the tow package. They come with the trac lock units, 31 spline and have the larger 7/8 pinion shaft to the mustangs 3/4 pinion shaft. Junk yards will sell them for cheap, go to ford buy the 03/04 cobra dif rebuild kit and buy some axles.

dif 100 bucks max
ford rebuild kit was 120 last i called
axles 250
gears 220

700 bucks max and you have a set up that will hold your 430hp and laugh at you

its in my car and i have/do cut 1.4-.6 sixty foots and it hasnt given me a problem yet

That's pretty close to what I paid. I'm running an Explorer differential with a new clutch pack and Strange 31 Spline axles. I added a complete bearing kit which ran up the cost a little more. I tried used gears and ended up getting a lot of gear whine so I went with new FRPP gears.

I have seen t-lok's with carbon clutches hold alot of power...I jus put 3.73's and carbon discs in it over the weekend..its alot more aggressive...I was looking at completely building the rear end next winter....moser 31's, granatelli girdle, CHE braces, c-clip eliminators, but I havn't decided whether to go with a 31 spline t-lok or look elsewhere...my friend has an eaton posi and he seems to really like it...any ideas?

i am running a diff that is from an f150, gears from a bronco, and the clutch kit can be changed to the carbon set up easily. install the carbon clutch rebuild kit in a 31 spline set up and it will be the same as the frpp unit. i will be installing the clutches in mine soon and i will be putting down some decent power thru it.

I've been running a super cheap set up for about 3 years.

35 used explorer 31 spline
45 diff rebuild kit with friction modifier.
205 usa alloy axels, came with new wheel studs and axle bearings.
30 used 3.73's from a ranger
80 8.8 rebuild kit
20 gear lube
150 labor.

So 565 installed for a 31 spline setup up with forged axles.

You can go either way, yeah t-lok's can do pretty well. I forget exact prices, but I have an Eaton 31 spline diff ($500), Moser 31 spline axles ($250), Ford Racing 3.73's ($180), Ford Racing Rear Diff cover ($180), and I forget how much the bearings were, but I'm pretty sure under $200.

ok. i think im going to try and do this junk yard thing. I would like to make this as cheap as possible. haha. But ok what is this Clutch pack thing?

And worst case scenario, lets say my local junk yard doesn't have the parts i need. Which Diff would i get from American muscle or some other vendor? whats a t-lock?

And why do i see people using the Strange Axles over the Mosers?

what are all the little accessories i will need? such as bearings, oil etc. Doesn't this stuff come with the kits if i buy new or no?

the t-lok is the ford factory limited slip diff. its a slutch style set up, there are couple different designs. you can find the diffs all day long on ebay for decent price. i have seen them go with a set of 3.73's for a little over $100.

Posi-track is what Chevy calls a limited slip differential. They are the same thing. Limited slip differentials are designed to be good for both corners and straight launches. Both tires receive the same power in a straight launch. In a corner, the outside wheel needs to turn faster than the inside wheel. The clutches in the differential allow that to happen.

Moser and Strange are competing companies. Both are good. (Strange Engineering ) (Welcome To Moser Engineering)

The 28 spline stock axle is perhaps the weakest part of the rear end. Stock GTs with drag radials have been known to break them. The stock axle tapers down to a smaller diameter just before it enters the differential. That's its weakest point. 31 spline axles do not taper down. But you need a 31 spline differential to use them. Once you break an axle, the only thing holding the wheel on is your brake caliper.

I was originally told that the stock rear end is good to around 400 rwhp as long as you use street tires. Some people have pushed it a little further.
