So here’s my question for the day. What all is entailed in swapping from a manual to auto trans? Has anyone on here done it? Are there computer issues to deal with? Again, I appreciate any information you can offer up. Thanks guys.

Depends what trans... if you're going with the stock style 4R70 or 4R75 you'll need an auto ECM as well as an updated 16 pin harness. It's also important to know that Ford has changed the pin outs on the trans and harness several times over the years so sometimes you will find that a different year's harness and/or trans isn't plug and play. You will also have to have the ECM reflashed to work with the pats in your car or you will have to swap the pats from the donor car as well. If you're going with a C4, it's a bolt in deal as the C4 is not a computer controlled trans.

How stout are the 4R70/75 trannys? It'd be nice to have overdrive still.

The 70 comes from the GT and fifty other Ford cars, the 75 came in the Mach 1 and I believe the Cobra also. The 75 has a better reputation for strength but is rather hard to find and expensive. The speedo input still comes from the trans and would be part of the new 16 pin harness. If you went with a C4, obviously there is no electronic input for speed, however you can adapt the ABS sensor to send the signal to a speed-cal and make the ECM and instrument panel function properly.

gay...haha jk but i like putting it in drive and forgetting about it! i can let it shift itself if i want yet i can still shift from 1-2 and 2-3 manually if i want.

and you CAN'T get the ECM reflashed when going manual to auto. thats only possible if going auto to manual. the manual ecm doesn't have the capabilities to control the auto.

its pretty straight forward and almost any harness should work. a harness from a 99 plugged right into my 04

you need

trans w/ converter
flex plate
engine divider plate
drive shaft yoke
shifter with cable
cooler lines
pedal assembly
auto ecm
auto trans harness
jumper plugs

you don't have to swap radiators. just get factory cooler lines and run them up to a big trans cooler

You must have missed the part where I said you have to swap to an auto ECM, then have it flashed to work with your pats module. No where did I say to reflash the 5 speed ECM.

its not a big deal. 10 minutes to swap the PCM

then get the keys programmed. probably around $50 bucks and 30 minutes of your time...

i guess the only problem is getting your car to ford. i worked at a ford dealer so we just took the computer home :D

or you could just go to your tuner and have him turn PATS off. then all you have to do is swap the PCM and it will start right up when your finished with the swap. shouldn't cost much either
