i recenently purchased a brand new 2006 4.0 liter v6 mustang which stock has 210 hp but i'm looking to be able to smoke a GT, can anyone help me try and figure out what i can do to it to gain an extra 150-200 hp. i only have a single exhaust right now so i'll probably have to install another and maybe some new headings and performance chip, but if anyone can give me some detailed information into how i might go around this or if it's even possible to do i'd be very appreciative, thanks alot.

thanks for the reply, i'm not huge into mechanics i'm only going to be in advanced auto next year so i'm not super expeirenced in this sort of thing, so could you be a a little more specific if possible in what i need to do to the gears and stuff of that nature or refer me to a website that can show me how to do it, also do you know how much that will all cost and how much horsepower it will add to it?

You have about 170-175 rwhp. You need about 275 rwhp to smoke an S-197 GT. If you can get into the low 14s, you can beat the New Edge (99-04) GTs. I run with 99-04 GTs though I have probably 200-215 rwhp.

You need 4.10:1 ring and pinion gears and a trac lok differential
Full exhaust
Tune
and forced induction: supercharge/turbocharge/nitrous.

You can 400rwhp if you get an 11psi procharger kit and good traction with the r/p gears/t lok setup. It will cost you about 4 grand for full bolt ons N/A car to run with the GT, or you can spend about 5.5K abd get the supercharger from Justin at VMPTuning.com and smoke GTs right off the bat. I wold be careful running high boost on stock internals though.

gears wont add engine horsepower persay - they will allow you to hit your power band sooner. not quite the same thing - what that means is that you will accellerate a bunch faster, but your top speed will suffer slightly.
that being said, for acceleration they are one of the most effective mods you can have done as far as bang for buck.
also, gears are not something you would do yourself if you dont have experience with it or someone who knows how to do it there to help you - while in theory its a pretty simple thing, it needs a certain level of precision that you need experience (and special tools) to achieve.

regarding the other things, the cai and exhaust will improve airflow to an extent, which lets your engine breath a little better, and make a little more power. cai will only add a few hp, maybe 5-8 (off the top of my head) - the exhaust will add a bit more than the CAI but not a huge amount. itll make the car sound better though :)
underdrive pullies dont make the engine make more power, but what they do is effectively "route more of the power to the wheels". meaning that normally the accessories like AC and pumps and stuff, take power from the engine to work - this new pulley will turn them less, which reduces the amount of HP you lose from that stuf - this translates into more HP *at the wheels*.

tune is good for 12-15 hp if i remmeber correctly - maybe some more if you really get a good one.

all together though, those mods will add up and make the car a lot more fun to drive -
i have most of those htings (i dont have underdrives) - i have 4.10 gears, new exhaust, decent CAI, and a tuner -
and while i dunno what my HP number is at officially, the car is definitely a lot more fun to drive now .

im sure atlantic will have stuff to say on this topic too

edit: looks like atlantci beat me to it while i was typing :)

thanks for the information, but i have a budget of about 1500 dollars so is it possible to at least get up to around 350-400 hp with that kind of money and would the supercharger mess up my engine without dual exhausts becuase i was afraid a supercharger could really do some damage under my hood?

There is no way in hell you can get more than 215-220 rwhp reliable for that money.

"Fast, Cheap, Reliable- pick two."

You can throw on a 125-150 shot of nitrous and run a mid-low 14 second 1/4 mile, but then you are waiting to blow the motor.

dang thanks alot, i do have access to an auto shop at my school though which were aloud to use to modify our cars, so with that said how much will all of that stuff run me if i install it myself with the help of my auto teacher, also is a supercharger worth how much it costs would my v6 be able to stay in contention with a a v8 if not beat it in a race. if it's possible i'd like to be running 350-400 hp but i don't know if thats possible on my car so if you could get back thanks alot

I have a set of MAC long tube headers for your car sitting around somewhere, but you can get them brand new drop shipped from mac for like $320 bucks or so. I have them in the attic I'm sure (from when I ordered the wrong ones last winter).

You can get long tubes, off road short H pipe and cat back with all necessary hardware cheapest at Ninosport.com and under $1000 for full exhaust. Then you have a few hundred to get a kickass dyno tune. I bet you could get into the mid-low 14s with full exhaust and an aggressive dyno tune.

If you are interested in full exhaust, PM me for the headers or information on how to get the forum discount from Ninosport.

how much do superchargers cost and how much horsepower do they add, also whats the difference between rwhp and hp
rwhp is the horsepower to the rear wheels. hp is a base horsepower number measured at the flywheel. You lose 12-18% drivetrain loss hp to the wheels generally. But full exhaust and a tune will allow for more air/fuel into the engine= more power.

S/C with 8psi will get you at 300-350rwhp
11psi will get you at 400-450rwhp with long tube headers to breathe abd scavenge the air

cost at about 5500 bucks for the kit- fuel pump, injectors, maf, piping, s/c, pulley, belt, then you need a 500 dollar dyno tune to run it safely.

Well, to run high psi, you need more fuel to meet the more air. You need a larger fuel pump, larger fuel injectors, larger Mass Air Flow sensor, the supercharger itself, the plumbing and oil feed lines, etc. It all adds up pretty quickly. Plus, after adding forced induction, you must get a dyno tune to not blow the motor. Vortech and ProCharger are descent. Do not buy an eaton or powerdyne unit for your car.

:D Trade it for a GT--then install the roushcharger-around $5800 (easy to install--only takes a day (plus 1 extra day for the chip to come from Roush). Then you have over 410HP and no wimpy V-6. :usa
why dont you..
A.) realize how old this thread is
B.) STFU......you F***in ppl like you! piss me off. go back to MF. why dont you trade your car for a sack

ur gonna need a lot of $$, mods, and time if you wanna accomplish that.

look into a supercharger, CAI, new exhaust, pulleys, headers, (if u dont care about looks, take the back seats out for less weight) and umm thats all i can think of for now

Yep, been there done that. You will be chasing the speed thing like a hot lady with cheep sunglases.

1. Tuned exhaust from Billy in Greenville, SC and Force Flow 40s. $400.00
2. C&L CAI with 90mm Mass Flow Sensor. Dyno and remove all RPM set poinnts. Leave the redline one alone, set for 6,200 RPM. At this point, you will be at 225 Hp with 251 flbs of rw torque. I have the papers to prove it. Cost $950.00

3. If you get Billy's tuned exhaust, get the JBA Short Tube Headers, no matter what anyone else says :funnah Its almost like long tubes and its 50 Legal. Cost $408.00 on Ebay.

4.Get some 9mm spark plug wires and put them on the car.

Been There Done That

Note....4 above cost $65.00 on Ebay.

5. Now...for top end only get a T-Lock rear end with a 8.8 ring gear and 4.10 pinion...so sweet. Get the rear end from Speed Concept out of California, they are take offs. Rear End cost is $569.00 shipping is $140.00, Ford Gears, Not that Motive Gear BS, real gears, cost $200.00.
Don't for get the flange for the rear end, the GT is different. The guys at Speed concept will tell you what you need for the flange, Cost $49.00. By the way, who ever sets up the differential for you, have them put the flange on at that time, Cost $250. I didn't and it was a PITA putting the new flange on.

6. Dyno the baby again, 238 RWHp, 285flbs of rwt, cost $250.00 Top end is 135mph. By the way, you do not need under-pullies...Ford already put them on for you to save a few bucks. Won't Read that anywhere :rockon

Been There Done That

6. Clairification, Ford thought they would save a few bucks by putting smaller pullies on the V6....we got a spiff with out paying for it.

7. Under Research: The stock V6 engine is marginal with NOS or SC. The engine water jackets design creates a head gasket problem. It seems that just 6psi boost has been blowing the head gaskets on the 2005s. Also, the piston rings are to close to the top of the piston, NOS or SC will crush the head of the piston into the ring surface..I bet it is not any different for the 2006, so be warned!

8. Still under investigation....if you build a stage 1 or 2 engine and beaf up the lower end and buy the stuff, pistons, rings, bearings, heads etc.and manifolds ( and do the work yourself) you might be able to get 90 additional HP with your CAI for a cost of $3,200. You now have 325hp and alot more torque. Add a SC, $3,600-$4,000. Still want to chase speed?

Been There and Doing that

9. Call me what you like, I am collecting info and parts to build the stage 2 engine to do solo II racing. With the SC, I will add an additional 100 - 125 hp. Will bring the total to lets say 400 - 450 rwhp and some great torque. However, this is all theory....you have to build it and test it to get the prize.

10. Suspension to keep it all on the road..Take off GTs right now, it is on rails, but you will have to do more that that if you do steps 7 - 9. Good luck and hope you don't have a wife :funnah . I have the wife and made a deal when I bought the 2005 V6 vert...she says I sandbaged her and she is not happy :award
