Check to see what gears are in it. If the gears are stock then a set of 3.73 gears will wake the car up. That $1000 should get you a set of GT40P (97.5-01 Explorer) heads, intake, throttle body, a good set of 1.7 roller rockers and gears. Should make 280+ horsepower at the tire and be one hell of a fun daily driver.

If you do it right, you can get up to 300rwhp out of gt-40 stuff. From what I've seen, stock SD cams from 87-88 5.0 HO's work well with the GT-40 stuff. They have slightly more aggresive ramp profiles, and can be had for next to nothing if you're lucky.

What year is the car?

Also, if you do the "p" heads, like darrell said, you either will have to get "p" specific headers (due to spark plug location), or most longtubes work, or deal with a few spark plugs being a pain to put in and out, and you will probably need 90 degree boots so that they don't touch the header and melt.

The guy above you has proof in his sig that the GT-40 stuff works very well.

91 will be a MAF (if you're a ford tech, I don't have to tell you that though) set-up so you can mod away. The earlier SD cars were a little finnicky with certain mods, but the MAF cars take them just fine. 1k couldn't be spent better than what darrell posted. If you're looking for some times at the track, also invest in a good set of lower control arms for the rear.

Also, if you have shorty headers, you could look for GT-40 heads (not p). The spark plug locations are in the same spot as the e7's so there aren't any header issues. I believe you can identify the GT-40 heads by 3 bars at the front of the head and the "p" heads by 4 bars at the front.

read this article: 1992 Ford Mustang LX Notchback - Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords Magazine

The path to righteousness started in the engine compartment, where the venerable 302 small-block Ford lurked. The short-block stayed as Ford designed it, but John swapped on a set of GT-40 iron heads. Dave Elk, who now swings wrenches for Pro Stock driver Larry Morgan, performed the machine work on the heads, which consisted of a full port-and-polish job, a three-angle valve job, and the shaving of 0.020 inch off the deck. Once the heads were placed on the 5.0L powerplant, a B303 bumpstick was promptly pushed in. The lobes of the roller cam open and close the valves with help from Crane Cams springs and a set of 1.6-ratio roller-tip aluminum rockers. Sitting between the heads is a GT-40 intake manifold.
